I am looking for a cheap compact minSAS 6Gbit JBOD chassi with 10-15ish disks. No expander, because expanders drive up the price.

Here are some examples

This 15 disk chassi would be perfect, but it has an expander and is therefore expensive.

You've given up on 24+ disks?

I think that 8 disk chassis is going to require two external SAS connections to access all 8 drives..

Why not get a Norco 4224 + PSU + Chenbro UEK Expander kit? 400 + 50 + 320 = $770
 
Without an expander, it just means you'll need 4 SAS ports on your rig, so, two M1015 for example. I don't know if the chassis you're looking for exists.
 
$100 Antec 1080 case will hold enough drives. You need to be creative.

$200 1 4 port PCIe controller card.

$220 4 1 to 5 port multipliers

Under $600 for the hardware to support 20 drives (40-60TB).

But I am not in the business of building systems like this for others.

SAS expanders are quite fragile, people say. But on the other hand, I am going to use ZFS, which will detect all problems at once, so fragility is not much of a problem for ZFS users.

On the other hand, I am thinking of giving up on 24+ disks. First I looked at Sans digital 8 disk chassi. Then Norco 4224. It is big. Then "more wants more", I started to look at Supermicro 45 disk chassi. And that is somewhere when I realised that 45 disks might be overkill for a home user. I need to get down to earth. Maybe 10-15ish disks will suffice for a home user. *sigh*

Today I have 8 disks in raidz2 in an Antec P182. But I want to separate storage and computing. This way I can hide the storage somewhere, and have a small PC in the room. Thus, a small PC chassis. And a minisas cable to storage chassis.

The problem is if ligthning strikes, then your PC and all electronics is toast. No surge protection will do against lightning. Then all my data is toast. So I want to separate storage and PC. But 10-15 disks will suffice I suspect.

I am considering to use the Sans Digital 8 disk JBOD chassi. I will have a raidz2 of 11 disks in total. 8 disks in the Sans Digital chassi. 3 disks in my PC - which will have an on/off power switch. And a SSD in the PC as system disk.

No 15 disk JBOD out there? I dont want another Antec 1080 big chassi. I want a small compact chassi that I can tuck away.
 
brutalizer : so your storage is virtualized on your main rig ?
 
15 drives (and related parts) fit nicely into a 13"x8"x6" package.

Not to hard to make up a custom box.
