Compact Disc Mouse

I'm... so confused. That looks terrible, to be quite frank.

considering that most laptops are moving away from optical media specifically the small portable ones that you might want to use a mouse with this is kinda pointless.

Well don't forget this is just a product "idea" at this point. Still, as someone who's done some serious traveling, anything I can do to reduce the bulk of my carry-ons is something I'm interested in. If someone could find a way to make this work, I would probably buy one. Even if you don't have an optical drive, it would still be easier to fit in a bag.

Huh, I guess it could catch on. Anythings possible, I mean the Ipad caught on.

Yeah, I doubt we'll ever see it on the market. It would be too small of a niche for the engineering that would be required to make it work.

I wouldn't say it technically caught on. I'm not even sure what you would call a product that has masses of people waiting to purchase it before it's even released. If the iPad 'caught on', they could have released a turd stamped with an apple logo and it would have 'caught on' too.

That mouse looks even less comfortable to use than a trackpoint/touchpad/trackball. Seriously, it looks like it would be similar to using a "puck" mouse from the old Apple iMac. *shudders*

I can't imagine it would slide at all. Sharp edges and so forth.

By the time this is developed CD rom drives won't be in 80% of notebooks. They would be better off making something that is flat and pops up but doesn't fit in a cdrom drive. It would probably turn out much nicer.

Ah, yes, these "show us your design - technical feasibility be damned!" sites...

To quote from the creator's description:
...we’ll leave the figuring of technology to the techies...

They should invent a laptop with a built-in mouse... oh wait..

You mean the HP OmniBook 300 or 600?

Omnibook300-31.jpg

(Yup, that's an attached mouse that slides into a slot in the side of the computer for storage, and pops out when you push a button.)

@CharonPDX
I've heard of that. From the descriptions, it's more like joystick than a mouse.

PS: Youtube is just about as good as google search, you can find anything :D

It shows what a 'built-in' mouse looks like.

Really? News to me. News to the laptop industry that is still putting optical drives in most laptops (netbooks I can understand the lack obviously). News to the universe?

Nah, most HP and Dell designs under 13 inches charge premium for optical drives these days. We're talking laptops, not netbook.

You'll almost always find optical drives in 14" and larger though without additional cost.

Take my boss's 12" HP Elitebook 2540p for example. About $900 without Gobi and optical drive, $1600 with them - at the time of launch anyways. Gobi 3G internet and an optical drive is definitely not worth the $700 premium. You're paying for convenience, not hardware.

My own HP Elitebook 2530p has a DVD drive and a Gobi 3G adapter built into it and also cost about $1600 nearly a couple years ago. But I love the thing. 1000x faster than a netbook and more feature packed. Company paid for it, else I'd get the cheaper DVD- and Gobi-less version.

Well My Trackball is very comfortable, More so than any normal mouse.

So. Wait. This concept design is something that I would drag across a surface... and be expected to put into my rom drive after scraping it on god knows what? Seriously? On a system that HAS ITS OWN FREAKING MOUSE BUILT IN?!
