comp wont boot w/raptor + hdd's

i just installed windows on my new raptor, and all went well (great actually). when i try to plug in my old hdd, my comp wont boot into windows. booth hdd's are recognized in my bios, and my raptor is set as the boot drive. i just get a black screen. any ideas would be welcome. thanks

did the old drive have a primary windows install on it before you took it out and formatted the raptor as primary?

if so, the boot sequence may be confused by the presence of 2 master boot records, thats my guess...

yes it did. any way i can get this to work? i just want to get some stuff off my old drive before wiping it and using as storage.

You might be able to boot to a command line and browse to the root of the old HDD and remove the the boot.ini or rename it to boot.old - that would stop any chance of it trying to jump into boot and cause conflict. Assuming the raptor has a boot.ini at the root as well there should be no problem

Edit: Does it boot from the raptor when you disconnect the old drive? If it does then the boot record is your problem.

yes it does...no prob....and fast at that

Ok so then its a conflicting boot record problem as suggested in the first reply. You can rename the boot record. Or delete it and then edit the one of the raptor drive. Unfortunately I can't remember how to do this manually, but I don't think it is difficult. I have a similar setup and could post my boot.ini for you, it should be the same.

scratch my last comment, just goto the root of the old drive,

delete boot.ini, that will work, the second drive doesn't need to be listed in the boot.ini unless you have a dual boot going on

Some boards give you the ability to set the disk boot priority.

If it doesn't try setting the boot disk to SCSI disk and see if that works. This way it should boot from the SATA controller instead of the IDE.
