Comp wont boot - mobo or PSU?

I think it is one of those 2 elements...

I hit the power button and the fan turns on, everything makes noise, but the monitor doesnt turn on, light doesnt turn green etc, so i cant even see the bios or anything. And the monitor is fine because i am using it with another computer..

Can anyone guess or do i need to give more info? Thank you
 
Well, what you can do first is see if you have an extra PSU around or if you can get one for testing. That is prolly the easiest way and the most cost effective way to find out if it is the Mobo or the PSU.

my first thought was, would the computer even power on if the psu was dead? Fans still turn on and noise is being made...
 
if you have a multimeter you can jumper the psu and power it up to test the lines.
 
Does the motherboard beep? A beep would indicate that it is at least trying to boot up.

Also, what parts are in this computer?
 
no beep from mobo
lights do come on on the cd roms and can open + close them

antec 400 watt psu
biostar m7ncdpro mobo
1 gig crucial 2700 ram
athlon 2800
audigy 2
ti4200 video card
 
Is there a speaker integrated into the motherboard or a case speaker plugged into the motherboard? You could try removing the memory and then booting up. The motherboard should beep like crazy with no memory. You should also reseat your processor by uninstalling it and reinstalling it.
 
thanks i will try this. And if there is no beeping at all that probably means the mobo is fried?
 
i am about to order a new mobo can anyone intervene or is PSU not yet ruled out :cool:
 
Have you made sure you have a speaker connected to the motherboard? Most of the motherboards have pins to plug in a speaker near where you plug in the power switch and reset switch and drive leds. If you don't have a speaker plugged in, you won't get any noises unless you have a motherboard with a built in speaker.

It is also possible your video card is bad :(
 
they keyboard light flashes on initially then stays off and hitting caps lock doenst flash a light. This would mean that the system is not booting, correct?
 
IMO it is your processor. The same thing happened to me yesterday. I fried a processor (not sure how) and one into the mobo everything sounds right but no video either. After testing EVERY componet from the video card, psu, ram and cable I put an older cpu into the mobo and it posted just fine and started up. Then just for more testing I put the non-working cpu into the older cpu's mobo and same symptoms. Hope this helps
 
When your PC does not POST, it's always 1 of 4 things:

1) Bad or badly seated CPU
2) Bad or badly seated memory
3) Bad video card
4) Dead motherboard

#5, if your heatsink is too tall, and is touching the power supply, and thereby shorting out, put some electrical tape there to prevent shorts. This has happened with my main system, where the heatsink retention clips were touching the power supply. Also just happened with a system I worked on today - small ATX case and inadequate clearance between heatsink/fan and power supply.
