I recently installed Ubuntu on a second harddrive on my computer and was very happy how ubuntu looked, but the harddrive it is on is outrageuosly loud, so i need to take it out. The problem is, when i take it out, i cant load into windows 2000 becuase the grub loader is missing (im guessing it was in the 2nd harddrive). Also when the 2nd harddrive is installed, wind 2000 loads very very slowly and applications load slowly too. This could be unrelated but i doubt it. I need to know how to put my comp back to normal, no 2nd harddrive, and normal booting, no grub loader, so how do i take out the grub loader thing.

Thanks, andrew

not 100% sure... but you need to fix the MBR (Master Boot Record). Try booting from the os cd and enter repair console... type fixmbr...

this is a Dell 4300, i never recieved a windows CD, also, even if i did, it would be the wrong one, we found a copy of 2000 to load on this comp for compatability issues (dont know where the CD is). Any way i can make floppy or something that would help?

please, any suggestions ideas. Even if its just speeding it up back to normal or something.

You really HAVE to boot to a win2000, winxp home, or winxp pro cd to fix your issue (im fairly certain any of them will work). You need to go into the recovery console (as Polish said)...follow the prompts until you get to a command prompt...then type:

fixboot (and press enter)

and then

fixmbr (and press enter)

then type exit...or just restart the computer (remove the cd)..and you should be good to go.

will the dell OEM recovery disks have this? or is there a way to download and burn a copy of this recovery console?

your dell should have a windows 2000 cd with it. the ones that i have at work are dark green in color.

Well, this is a special case (sadly) this dell came with XP home, but becuase of compatability issues, we wobtained a copy of windows 2000 just to load onto the comp and be done with. I do not know where this cd came from, and therefore have no idea how to get it back. Do you think the dell XP home recovery CD would have the right stuff?

ok, i found the Dell WIn XP home cd and put put that in and got to the recovery console fine, but i am hesitant to type fixboot and fixmbr.
Will it badly affect my system that it is fixing the boot (and Mbr) for an XP install, im basing this off of what the boot says now:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

Do you think it would work if i just did fixmbr?

Also, will any of this affect my data?
