Do I need to buy a sound card in order to connect my desktop speakers to the HDTV .

If not necessary, what cable(s) do I need and how to connect the speakers to HDTV ?

Thank you

I highly doubt you need a sound card but we need to know what speakers and tv you have.

i have a set of logitech Z2300's (2.1 setup) connected to my tv. your tv should have an audio out and all you'll need is the appropriate cable, which is an RCA cable in my case.

FYI, in general computer speakers are not ideal for home theater use. the shitty Z2300's i have are atrocious. all bass and nothing else. i bought them on a whim back in 2008, should have researched a bit. we don't watch a ton of tv so it's easy to ignore but eventually i'll replace them with something like a cheap t-amp and a nice set of bookshelf speakers.
