over the last few weeks i've been notcing a rather annoying issue where just as my dvd drive starts to read the cd, my comp will freeze. i haven't tried it in my normal cdrw drive because i rarely use it any more. but when i play dvds or lately mostly when i start halflife 2, it locks up. same thing when i open my computer and it spins up to see what the cd is in the drive. it doesn't do it every time, so when i have something open and i just open my computer to do something, it's really rather annoying. any ideas?

Do a reboot of the computer fix the issue ?

I was suffering the same issue with mine lately and i'm trying to find a cause.

Go to device manager and check your IDE controller(s). The Advanced Tab of your primary and secondary channels will show the current transfer mode. Make sure they're DMA and not PIO.

they are set to dma .. and rebooting doesn't help. i tried doing a normal shutdown/restart a while ago with no luck, and obviously when it freezes the reboot doesn't help there.

From what I've read, a DVD drive BIOS flash might be in order. My LiteOn 851S DVD drive is behaving itself (so far) but I've heard that problems such as yours can be fixed with a BIOS upgrade.
