Comp not booting to CD

I have an old compaq I am trying to install an os on.

The problem is that it won't boot from the CD.
I have not changed anything in the bios (I even forgot how to access them).

The CD is fine as well as the HD and CD drive.

I tried moving the CD to the main IDE and HD to 2nd.
I tried chaining them in both IDE slots (each in the end and middle).

Nothing.

I put the hd, and cd drive into another old compaq and it works fine.

This comp is not going to used for anything aside from playing old games. (Win98 install)

Would there be any major complications to installing the OS on the drive from another comp and then moving it over? They are both Compaqs if that matters.
 
go into bios and make sure your cd-rom is set as a boot device, there is usually an assigned button to bring up the boot screen at startup

No clue. I have no idea where the outer case is at. :D

All I have right now is the frame and guts.



As far as gettign in the bios, I can't remember what I hit to access them. It's not del.
 
If none of the suggestions work above you can always make yourself a good ole floppy boot disk with CD-Rom support (I can't remember if 98 has it but ME did) then you'll have access to it at least.
 
hmm, never done of those, I try to stay away from floppies nowadays.

Got any info on how I make one?
 
just hit f1-f12 and one will let you in to bios. hopefully theres no bios password

Windows 98se (For sure) lets you create a start up disk. You go to control panel -> Add Remove Software -> Startup Disk Tab (I think) From there just follow the directions. When its done pop it out and stick it in your compaq and be sure to select the option to boot WITH CD-Rom support...that should let you get to the OS on your CD.
 
F2 or shift-F2 might work on a compaq, try that.

Chances are it will let you boot from a CD, so I'd just keep trying to get in. You know you'll get into the BIOS with either a function key, delete, or combination of those + CTRL ALT or SHIFT. That's not many combinations to try out.

del does no work on Compaqs, or at least the 2 I have.

I will try the F's later tonight.
 
Press ESC it should take the logo screen off... There it will say what button to push to get into BIOS. You have to be fast though because it is like 1 sec.
 
well, got to the bios.
shift+F8
reset everything to default. Still nothing.

I think I may try an old paralell CD I got from a buddy the other night.

Maybe it just wants to be a bitch and not hold more than 1 item on the IDEs
