See update below! vvv

I've had this computer for 3+ years ... built it myself. 2 days ago, it would not load windows (2000). In the DOS screen where it says Starting Windows there's a progress indicator bar. When it reached 95% it would reset the computer.

I used my W2K CD to boot from and ran a repair on it. It worked and windows restarted correctly. I used it for a few hours and started getting application errors which would close them ... etc. It was late, so I turned it off.

This AM ... same behavior as before. However, now I can't even boot from the CD nor the HD. I even tried booting from the floppies I had made previously. Same thing ... as soon as it prints starting windows in the grey bar at the bottom of the screen in the windows setup after having loaded all the drivers, it resets.

Is my HD fried? It seems to happen at the SAME spot each time and now I can't even re-install? (I think the HD is fried, but I've never heard of a slow death like this)

Let me know what you guys think ... if it's salvageable.

I'm running a T-Bird 750 (I loaded the fail-save BIOS settings to eliminate any agressive settings)
Abit Kt7 non raid
The HD is a Deathstar (Deskstar 30GB)
Geforce2-GTS
Antec Power supply

did you try disconnecting the HD and booting from the cd rom? If that works out ok your hd might be smoked.

Nope I didn't try that, but I will tonight when I get home ... obviously I can't use that computer to browse these forums from home :D ... I have no spare unfortunately... that will change soon.

does the bios boot up? if not, and you get no boot from cd drives/floppy, then ur screwed. it happened 2 me once and i had 2 send back my computer for a new 1... it was stuck in an endless reboot cycle. try popping in a new hd tho...

It might get finnicky if the fd is bad, so you may wanna disconnect and disable it in the bios

1- The P.O.S.T. is fine ... it makes it all the way to Starting windows after the Verifying DMI pool message (which I don't have a god damn clue what it means)

2- I'll try disconnecting the floppy too ... but I'm not too optimistic.

The POST-to-reset cycle takes approximately 20 seconds ... more if I load from the CD ... it's not like it's rebooting every 1-3 seconds ... however it is stuck in an endless rebooting loop if I let it go.

UPDATE

I tried your suggestions ... NADA

So I started pulling stuff out. I pulled a stick of RAM out and BINGO!

When I built this computer, I had 1 stick of Mushkin RAM(128 MB) CAS2. That became too little last year so I added a stick of Mitsui CAS2 (256MB). Well, it turns out that paying for top quality does make a difference. The Mitsui is out now and it boots like a charm. (I am writing this post from the box in question)

I'm going to try to swap them and see if it isn't the location or at least if I can run the 256 Mitsui in the main slot ... I'm thinking it could be some electronics(capacitors or potentiometeres I don't know) on the memory bus in the second slot which are getting flaky.

Maybe it isn't the Mitsui RAM, but that's where my money is.

The thing is, I ran Memtest86 when I started getting could not read memory or something like it, and although I only let it do one full pass, it passed all the tests with no errors. Oh well, live and learn!
