my dad wants to build a pc, and he's decided to get the parts today at fry's....

its just gonna be used for like..getting maps, checking emails, sendig pics of stuff, and maybe watching a few streamed drama's from korean sites..

i was wondering, if an amd sempron 2500+ was a good enough cpu, cuz its cheap(its kind of a budget comp) or would that even be too much? and also, should i make it 256 or 512 mb? i was thinkin 256, but just to make sure...

we're leavin in a couple hours, so super fast answers would be appreciated! :D

thanks in advance

How much are you looking to spend? For his uses you could probally build a cheap AMD Duron 1.6GHz system for around $300. Also 256MB should be fine. Just make sure he does not have a bunch of applications taking up valuable recources working in the background.

300? psh....haha..now i feel kinda ashamed when i say.....250 max....preferably under 200..(not including monitor and keyboard and stuff) :( ... :p

but this doesnt have to be exactly good quality stuff right? i mean..my sister has some cheap ram we got for around 40 bucks, and its been fine for wat she's been doing(basically the same, except with added aim, and no maps)

and you know how fry's has those mobo/cpu combos for cheap (saw a sempron 2500+ and a mobo for 75) the mobo doesn thave to be great

When I said $300 I was including CPU, motherboard, case, RAM, Windows XP Home and hard drive. Of course if you do not need an OS that can be taken out of there and you should save like $90. Sorry I should of been more specific.

Just don't throw away the receipt if you do buy the combos. I've had a friend that's encountered problems with them before (ones from Fry's). Really cheap though.

I guess you don't like your dad very much huh? I built my dad a Shuttle SN45G, XP-M 2500+, 512MB of Corsair XMS, 9600XT. He's a happy camper!

For his dads uses he should be more then happy...

i would get 512mb of ram if possible.. it will make the biggest difference for the money IMO...

but yeah a $75 cpu/mobo combo.. memory.. hd.. case.. just go cheap all the way and you should be fine.. all of my computers up until my shuttle were built with the absoulte cheapest crap, and the problems i had were always minor...

I'd go for the extra ram too. It'll prove to be worth it in the long run. [shameless plug] And for the time being he can always fold with it [/shameless plug]

haha...but im only 14 :p

and luckily , the stuff was expensive compared to wat i saw on newegg and stuff, so i convinced him to buy it online...which means, i have more time for advice :D

ill see if i can get the 512mb's...and thanks for all the replies guys..

Another vote here to get 512mb of ram atleast. My mother's system does the same stuff your dad's is going to be doing, and when I sometimes use it to check something on the net or use word etc I can tell the difference before I switched out her 512 for 256mb. She doesn't notice though, but still...it's there

Since you can now buy stuff online what about this?

AMD Duron 1.8GHz
Biostar M7VIZ
APEX Beige Mid-Tower Super Case with 350W Power Supply
Corsair Value Select 512MB

That case at first when I looked at it, but look at the reviews. It has over 100 reviews and just about all say good things about it and for $20 it seems like a good deal.

Also if you need anything else then you could probally just go to newegg and get the cheapest there and it would be fine for your dad. Still try to get a good product though.

Don't slack on the case/psu. Nothing in the world like a shitty psu that came with a cheap case eating your baby.

For a few bucks more, get a Sempron paired with mobo. Fast and saves the dough on separate purchases.

Fry's usually has a budget box on sale for 199.00 every week in their ad. It is pretty stripped down and comes with a distro of linux, but not a bad buy for the money.

i hate to say it.. but for about $300 shipped you can get a dell sc420 server with 512mb ddr2, 80gb hd, 3+ghz celeron, nice case, keyboard, mouse... etc.. i hate ever mentioning dell.. but really it is worth looking into..

otherwise.. find a case locally if you are going with a cheap one.. cause shipping costs will be $10 on any case.. at least.. then get something like a shuttle an35 mobo, duron, 512mb of ram. etc.. copper cpu cooler... and you should be set..
