I'm working on a computer with what I believe to be a faulty boot record. The computer will ONLY boot up if there is a windows xp professional disc in the drive. I have to bypass booting from cd and it boots right to the hdd. I take out the cd and it says there is a boot disc error. Now, I went into windows recovery console and did a FIXBOOT command and also a FIXMBR command, but neither helped. I'm trying to avoid formatting at all costs. Any help is appreciated. The OS is Windows XP Professional.

i had that exact same problem, it would say system error, or enter boot device or something to that effect, but if the XP pro cd was in, it would boot without a hitch. Unfortunately, i fixed it by formatting. Just backup your stuff and bite the bullet ;) sorry i couldn't offer a solution other than formatting, there probably is away to fix it w/o formatting, but i couldn't find one.

I'm going to try and format just the master boot record. There is no reason to format the drive itself. Thanks though.
