For my car i'm getting, i'm planning to do a 1337 mod with like "1337" vinyls on the sides. so i was thinking it would only be appropriate if i used computer audio. Also, it's cheaper. Comp+monitor+thx speakers ~= 600. So i was thinking, has anyone else done this? I'm going to put my z-680s in my current car this weekend. any reason why it won't work? I don't want "thumpn" audio. just a great music experience for drivers seat.

lololololol
That is to funny. :)

Seriously, you can pick up just a true car audio system for less then $200 that will clean the floor with those speakers.
Why even bother with such an exercise?

yea 200 for speakers..but another 500 for headunit. 200 for woofer. 50 for woofer box supplies, +time and labor on woofer enclosure. and with this, I get a car-comp with lcd display.

Yeah right. A car stereo system for $200 that will beat that? I think it's been years since you've priced car stereo equpment.

No, it has been about 5 minutes.

So tell us what car audio system you bought for $200? "Hot" car stereos don't count.......;)

I didn't buy anything.... Yet. ;)
The day that happens I will post said information in the appropriate forum.
OK?
The last time I checked this was the computer audio section not the car audio section.

I agree. Even a cheap automobile cd/speaker package will put any PC multimedia speakers to shame. He'll learn from the time wasted at the end.

The speakers I want for my car aren't even under 200 bucks! They used to be 150 a pair. Well, now they're 99 buck a pair.

Infinity 63.5i Perfects.

Man, you're z 680 will just kick so much ass in a car.

Why the fuck(I needed to say that for emphasis over the traditional WTF) are you spending the most on a damn head unit when you should be spending more on the amp and/or speakers/woofer.

Woop dee, you get a car-comp with LCD that will blow chunks. Wait a minute, wth is your amp anyway? I hope you don't expect the headunit to power your woofer + speakers.

You know, from the looks of this you are new to this. I could be wrong. At the very least you should carefully calculate how much internal volume you need for your woofer enclosure. Sounds like you're just going to build a box around your woofer.

SPL woofer enclosure = ported.
SQ woofer enclosure = closed.

Best of both/maximum slam = bandpass

Things get more complicated when calculating internal volume if you add holes to the box.

lol
Hark, don't beat around the bush.
Tell us what you really think. :D
What I am confused about here is how the Z680's act as a "head unit."
Do they have a built in CD transport?
Tuner?
Cause I sure as hell would like to know when they added those features. ;)
Won't you still need a head unit?
The way I see it is all they are is an active speaker system ... so all you need to replace them with is an amp and some speakers.

You know, most 500+ dollar headunits aren't even amplified. They require a separate amp for the speakers and sub. That's how I powered my last system. I said fuck with the head unit, even. I didn't want people to know I had a system. I was still in HS and a lot of that stuff gets stolen from campus. No need to draw attention. I ran an amp for the woofer and a separate one for the speakers.

What do I really think? I think this guy will have way too high expectations for his application. He's gonna fall on his ass when it sounds like shit. I hope he's not an overzealous Logitech fan.

I'm confused too. First he said he was gonna put his z 680s in his car. Now he says he's gonna spend 200 on woofers, 200 on speakers, and 500 for a headunit that more than likely isn't even amped. He also never mentioned an amp.

Most blown woofers are the cause of insufficient wattage to power them.

We should probably let the moderators do THEIR job and decide what's appropriate for computer audio:rolleyes:

Or use common sense, man.

I hardly think putting Z-680's in a car qualifies as "Computer Audio". Now if he had a laptop in there or a small computer built into his car, then maybe, just maybe, it might qualify.

p.s. Comp Audio has a mod? :x

well i was planing for my comp to be the headunit basically. and yea yea i dind't list the amp. i was just making a point that a complete car audio system would cost a great deal more than a complete computer system. so for like 600 total, will i get better sound with a computer+z680s or cheap normal car audio parts?

Probably a car audio system

The problem with computer woofers is that they are not designed to go very low in terms of frequency. Bass is just low frequency sound.

A decent car audio woofer will go down to 10-15 Hz. There are cheap, good woofers for cars. Might want to look at Audiobahn line up. I would at the very least say to have a look at the Infinity Perfect Kappa 12. Now that is a bargain and an awesome woofer. That particular one won a few SPL competitions a few years ago when they first came out.

I really don't think a z 680 set up can touch any car audio system even if it's cheap. The Perfect Kappa 12s and a lot of the Audiobahn woofers can be had for under 200 bucks. I would say scrap the head unit, unless you want the coolness factor and the potential of theft to go with it. Instead I'd get 1 or 2 amps. There are a lot of set ups you can go by. If you plan to buy speakers, just get a cheap amp that has enough wattage to power the speakers. The bulk of the money spent should go to the amp powering the woofers...unless you get a really cheap woofer that has like 150 watts of RMS power. Also, might want to consider farad caps for fast recharge. Make sure your alternator has enough juice. Check your car battery as well.

EDIT: My car used to have the Infinity Perfect Kappa 12 powered by an Alpine amp. The 12 denotes the size of the woofer...12 inches. My bro on the other hand has 3 ten inch Audiobahn woofers(forget the model number, but they are the chrome ones; the higher end ones). He's using a class D JBL amp good for 1200 watts to power all three of them.

Something else to note. I don't recommend you go lower than 10 inches for a woofer. 10 inch is good for all around bass. 12 inch is better for lower frequency bass. Go over 12 inches in my experience and you lose some of the higher end bass. ...the driver and magnet will be a lot heavier to drive which in turn makes moving the volumes of air harder, especially for music like electronica where a lot of fast, punchy bass is prevalent(SP?).

My next system would be a 10 and a 12, or maybe two 10s and a 12.

Don't crap out on the amplifier.

hmm..thanks for a helpful post. i guess i'll do some research on cheap car audio setups. all i know is my friends' setups have been around 1k.

You can blow a lot of cash on a headunit that in the end is not very good at powering speakers. You have a "cool" graphical equalizer. They're cumbersome to use also. ...too many buttons.

You can save a lot by just getting 2 amps, one for the speakers and one dedicated to the woofers. That, and you won't need to worry about someone jacking your system as much.

I'm willing to bet that most stock car audio setups will sound better than putting multimedia speakers in a car. Just look at the size of them and ask yourself if you will get good sound out of it. You really do not need a $500 head unit. If you spend even $100 on a car stereo and a couple hundred on speakers and not even use an amp then it will sound better than computer speakers. I don't know if it is blasphemy around here to not use amps and subs, but it is certainly possible and you can still get decent sound. Z680 in a car is a waste. Z560 makes better sense. He could just plug the set into a portable CD player or mp3 player and he's set. It's feasable and pretty economical, considering you can get the Z560 for around 130'ish new nowaday. Only problem I see with this is the ghetto factor and finding a DC-AC converter big enough to power the Z560. For around $250, it can be done. Ofcourse, it won't sound as good as a car audio system with component speakers and subwoofers, but the system will cost him alot more. Car audio industry is grossly inflated :(

Man, you guys don't want to know what kind of $$$ I put into the stereo in my "car" then (+ "comp audio") - and it is no where near what some others will pay. Came to a wee bit more than $200 or a set of computer speakers though.

Still, it was a legimate question. Doesn't hurt to ask

This is only a rough est. for a most basic set up for car audio components. It does not include professional installation.

Head Unit /CD receiver - $200

Front speakers 5 1/4 to 6 1/2" coaxes - $59 - $99

Rear Speakers same as above $59 - $99 (optional)

Subwoofer - 8", 10", 12" $59 - $129 (I use 2 x 8" in a ported enclosure). How many determines SPL

Outboard Amp for fronts 2x50-75 watts $129

Subwoofer amp 1x250-500 watts - $199 - $259

Wiring and distribution - approx. $100

Interconnects for 2 amps - $40

Misc. $50

I didn't make a total because there are variables you would have to choose like do you want rear speakers, how many subs, etc.

As you can see, it's costly to buy just the parts, for a basic car system. Some serious car stereo buffs spend tens of thousands on their systems and installs. This past summer I put a basic system in my g/f's car that she was happy with, of course she was listening to the stock Toyota set-up so just about anything would be an improvement. It consisted of:

Pioneer CD receiver - $120 new
Alpine 4x30 watt amp $60 used
JL Audio 3 1/2" coaxs in the stock dash location - $40 new
Panasonic 5 1/4" coaxs in rear deck - $ 20 new
Wiring and distribution - $75
Interconnects - $20

All of the above except the wiring was bought off ebay. For less than $350 she has a basic system that sounds ok. It's really up to you.
