Common Temps for 6400?

Hi guys. Im new to posting here but have surfed around from time to time. The conroe overclocking database sticky was a great help for me to decide what equipment to get for my new rig.

Anyways, I plan to add my overclock once I get a stable one that I am happy with. Right now My E6400 is running at 8x400 = 3200. It is set at ~1.4 volts. Right now I am running orthos Small FFts and TAT is reading that both cores are hovering around 69C and sometimes reaching 70C. I was wondering if these were expected temperatures considering the volts and it being loaded down by orthos. I am using the SI-128 heatsink by thermalright and A silverstone 120mm fan on top of it running at full speed (rated at around 110cfm). Anyone else get these kind of temps at this setup? Its been running for over 2 weeks now so the ceramique is probably as conductive as its going to get.

have you tried dropping the voltage because you shouldn't need that much to be stable at 3.2? anyways what is your psu like?
 
Well, I cannot get stable at 3.2GHZ at all and it is my CPU as with a x7 multi it runs stable at 2.8GHZ (same FSB).

As far as temps, it seems a bit high, but not too far off.

When I tried running at 1.3875v my temps got up to the high 50s, low 60s with my Zalman 9500 cooler.

Im somewhat a noob at the newer style of overclocking (used to be so simple...). What should be my next step? And also, can someone tell me what the effect is when the PCI-e bus is increased?

very bad if it goes too high it crashes, means more through put. (increased megahertz = faster). i would lock the pci-e at 100mhz and the pci bus at 33mhz most mobos do this. disable spread spectrum and the com1, com2, parralel if you are not using them...

OK I have the same DS3 motherboard as you, I have the Zalman 9700 CPU cooler, and I have a Ultra 500W power supply I got free after $40 rebate.

I am running an E6400@3760 MHz using 1.55V at core temperatures around 45C after 6 hours of orthos. {measure using TAT, the Intel Thermal Analysis tool, or sometimes I use CoreTemp utility. But TAT is better}

Now I have been told by many that my core temps are fantastically low but they are 25 degrees Celcius lower than what you are getting. Your temps are way high. You need to do some airflow management of that PC. Clean up all wires. If you can get a front intake fan in the front of your case install one. If you have an 80mm exhaust fan scrap it and install a 120mm exhuast fan. But don't add any other fans you don't need them.

Sure some will say you can run a Conroe as high as 75C well I am not one of those people and don't buy that line for a minute. You need to get those core temps under 60C and pronto. And 55C or under is even better.

I suggest remounting your CPU cooler with the absolute minimum amount of Arctic Silver 5 heat paste that you need to turn the CPU a grey color. Then get that exhaust fan running at full temperature. On the DS3 motherboard in BIOS settings go to PC Health page and disable the automatic fan control so your CPU fan and any case fans attached to your motherboard runs 100% all the time until you can solve the problem
 
Another suggestion is click on the User CP link at the top of this page, go to edit my signature, and make your signature include your entire hardware setup, case, fans, etc because when you ask more questions then we will know your setup and that helps good luck with it.
 
I will probably try and remount the heatsink soon, using the least amount of Ceramique as possible. I need to remove the heatsink anyways to find out the stepping so no big deal.

So if my heatsink is correctly mounted then the problem is most likely with the airflow of my case. Im thinking this is most likely the issue because... well... ill show you what it looks like.

 
I looked at your diagram and I agree with you. The airflow through the case is not bad at all. But having the heatsink block the exhaust fan may be your issue. That is a massive heatsink and should do a great job cooling. If you can replace the 80mm exhaust fan with a 92 that is great. If you can mount a 120mm that is even better, that is the ideal size in my opinion. If a 120mm will fit in that position and lie flat, you should install it for your exhaust even if you need to drill 4 screw holes in the case to mount it.

One 80mm intake fan is fine. I have just one 80 in fact I slowed mine down to 5.5V operation by wirings in a resistor so it is silent running. What you might want to do is go to a bigger exhaust fan preferably 120mm and move the 80 from the rear to the front. Lets cool down the temperature first and worry about noise later.

Also before you change any hardware: what are you using to control the speed of your fans? The CPU fan and the rear exhaust fan, I mean?

You should plug these 2 fans into your motherboard (assuming your exhaust fan is a 3 pin design) and then do not use the motherboard Smart Fan software in the BIOS to control the speed. Download and install SpeedFan software and use it to control the temps

But before you do that go in to the BIOS and disable the speed control go to PC Health setting and neear the bottom Smart Fan Control Method set it to DISABLE. This will make the CPU fan and exhaust fan run at 100% speed. Then when you run SpeedFan there is a way to let the software control the speed and it will slow it down or speed up as needed. I can help you set up speedfan it is a little tricky.

I have the Zalman 9700 fan and one advantage to the Zalman is it blows the hot air right into the exhaust fan and out it goes. But you have a nice CPU cooler already no need to change it.

Just try and keep it under 70ish under load, when you get into the mid 70's and 80's it will start to decrease the life of the CPU, but 70 and below will be more than fine.

I notice in your signature your setup is nearly identical to mine.

I have the same E6400 CPU as you, the same exact motherboard as you, the same brand & model of memory as you, even the same type of video card as you (7900 GS).

But while your system is running at 3200 MHz, I am running at 3760 MHz. :D

I think that temperature management is the key to high overclocks. ;)

You're welcome to your different opinion though.
 
difference is, I am running stock cooling in a htpc case (smaller than yours) and with crappy airflow :p

Temperature management is the key to overclocks, but what you are telling him is that 55C and below is best for the chip, which in all likely hood it may be, but the fact is, you can run it 20 degress C more and still be within the limits of normal operations.
 
not to mention, rule 1 with airflow, always have negative pressure in the case (more going out then in (slight difference is best). i would get a 92mm fan for the rear fan. i used a dremel and gut the silly case grill as the holes are not big enough. basically if small holes and 30% or more of the air the fans trying to push out the case is hitting places with no holes and being pushed back. so i simply cut a hole, bought a $2 grill (has thin wires in a circle,) and now no push back happening. also your vga cooler does it expell the air out the case. if not then well its pumping 50 degrees C (and up) back into the case, change it for one that expells the air.
