Common Sense Needed

Sorry, its another one of those "what graphics card should I buy" threads....

In my case I'm currently using a GTX-680 (which has served me well) and with Witcher III upon us, it has become blatantly clear that the time for an upgrade is, now, well nowish....

I'm using a 1080p Screen, but would also very much like to upgrade it to 1440 (Next item on shopping list). My dilemma is that I can't upgrade every year, or every two years and so I need a card that as "future-proofed" as much as possible.

I've saved enough to go out and buy a 980, but I'm very intrigued by the prospect of a 980ti. and then there is the Titan....

I guess I'm looking for a card that will serve me well at 1440 and be usable for 2-3 years which leans me towards a 980ti but in the big picture the dollars between what we think a 980ti will cost and what a Titan does cost its not a huge jump... Essentially, Hearts saying Titan, brain says 980 and the Ti keeps popping up in both....

Please help introduce some common sense to my dilemma

I would wait for the 980 Ti. The standard 980 can do a lot with 1440 but max setting with a consistent smooth frame rate isn't one of them.

^ agreed, in the light of the few games that are known to eat VRAM, 4GB isn't all that of a good buy at the moment. 6GB would be a sweetspot for 1440p, for current games and future releases with room to spare.

Me and my 670 are sticking it out until Pascal next year. That's when I'll be getting a new monitor as well.

There is no common sense in such things. I was in the same dilemma, and my heart won out. So now I'm the owner of a TITAN X, even though my brain kept saying wait for the 980 Ti. It is really nice to not have to worry about VRAM usage for awhile. I also plan to move to a 4k display at some point.

If you don't want to wait for the potential (and likely) 980ti refresh to be released, then I'd recommend SLI 970.

If you are asking for help, Im betting you have a slight buyers remorse conscience. I'd definitely wait for the potential 980 ti release to compare the specs to the Titan X. Then make your decision with the information, cause if you wait any longer then its got to be something else you have.... ;)

You will feel better if you didnt jump the gun.

Wait for Ti and for AMD to launch something. Pricing should be better after those things happen.

i'd say wait for amd to launch their new card, and see if nvidia responds with 980 ti then go from there.

While I run that and it's perfect for 1440p for now, the segmented memory might cause issues way into the future. I've yet to see it happen as everything runs rather well but given the current cards on the market, I'd wait for at least the 980 Ti. The Titan X when overclocked gets quite close to 970 SLI speeds so if the 980 Ti ends up being a good overclocker (like the 970 is) then it might be a great choice. 6 GB RAM is plenty for 1440p.

As it is, I don't think the 980 is that good a purchase. In many games it doesn't seem to perform all that much better than the 970 despite costing quite a bit more. Maybe if its price drops when the 980 Ti is released, then the 980 will be a better buy.

Well, there are two options that are good.

GTX 970 SLi
GTX Titan X

The former is cheaper but you can eventually get another Titan X when prices drop.

another vote to wait for the 980Ti...

970 isn't much of an upgrade from your current card, and the 980 isn't worth the price difference from the 970. I personally never recommend SLi... if you have the money for SLi, just spend the money on a single card instead... less power draw (lower electric bill), less expense on a power supply, better compatibility, and overall bang-for-buck. Last SLi I ran was GTX260s...

Unless of course... money is no concern... then, just get a Titan X

A 970 is going to offer a pretty decent performance gain over a 680, as well as the benefit of less power draw and heat output.

I'm still inclined to say wait for the upcoming desktop Maxwell refresh.
