Comments on this onboard sound?

If by "surround sound" you mean Dolby Digital and DTS, then yes, it supports it via analog and S/PDIF digital. Of course, being 5.1, it doesn't support extended 6.1 formats like Dolby Digital EX or DTS-ES. It doesn't support EAX, according to Realtek's product page.
