Been out of the loop with sound cards lately and found lots of comments on these.
Problem is that there are a few models and I'm not sure how they compare to each other or how good they are really??

All I know so far is that the Prelude is the only one with the XiFi chip and it supports the latest EAX.

Comments, suggestions?

It depends on the features you are after. Each card starting from the top is newest to older. I have the X-Plosion DTS connect. I don't use EAX and prefer dolby digital for playback and recording. I transfer "vinyl" to digital.

What are you looking for? Gaming, audio playback, recording or a little of everything?

I have the prelude, I'm not going to repeat all the highly positive reviews it, but I will say it's my favorite sound card since my turtle beach with the aureal3d chip

I don't like how it doesn't simultaneously output through both the analog and S/PDIF (the X-Fi cards do). Mic input is also way to soft (but I just use the mic input on my motherboard). Other than that it's a solid card.

I bought a Prelude yesterday and compared to the X-fi Extreme Music the difference in sound is very big with my speakers and Senneheiser 595 headphones (with cheapo 50$ headphone amp). Since I have no problem running only with analogue output for 5.1 I'm very happy with the card.

I don't know how big the difference is with normal computer speakers, as my speakers play in an entirely different league from the Z-5500 or Gigaworks speakers and take up a lot of room, but if you're using high quality headphones like Sennheiser 595 or any other 100$+ headphone it's very well worth getting the Prelude as the difference in sound is very big from the X-fi Extreme Music I had before. I would estimate that I only heard like 75% of their capacity before.

Thanks for the replies!

I'm mostly looking for gaming and movies/video.

For now though I have decided to wait for high end PCIe sound cards to come out and then I'll upgrade the speakers and the whole lot.

The X-Fi drivers are pants especially for 64 bit OS. I just installed the latest 27/09/07 patch for the X-Fi prelude and they work a treat !

I previously had a X-Fi Fatality and had all manner of problems when using it with XP X64.

Admittedly it was fine with XP 32 bit.

I have noticed the Prelude does sound better in games I have played to death, ie C&C3 and BF2 plus Auzentech seem to be listening to the driver issues and commisioning new fixes and patches unlike Creative.

It seems Creative are quite happy to let their existing customers suffer yet any 3rd party company like Auzentech that is willing to pay for new drivers then Creative will support them.

I'd like to upgrade to a prelude once I get my receiver/xl-s/x-sub setup going, until then I am very happy with my x-plosion with upgraded op-amps and klipsch analog setup.

fantastic cards
