I know that there are a lot of threads like this but can you tell me how this is looking:

A64 3500+ venice core (when and if it comes out :p)
ATI x800xl GC
DFI "Lan Party) Ultra D
Seagate 250GB 7200rpm HDD
2x512 ram (unsure whether to shell out high $ for good ram?)
NEC 3250A dvd burner
Enermax EG701AX-VE 600w PSU
Sound Audigy 2 SC
Zalman copper HSF

I am still unsure about the case - any comments on the system so far and recommendations for changes and case?

The 3200+ Venice is really more advisable, as it's about $100 cheaper and yet you can overclock it to well beyond 3500+ speeds-- Venices are KILLER overclockers according to the tests done so far.

For RAM, even value RAM is "good" RAM, hell, GREAT ram. The stuff you see with titles like Ultra Low Latency or XMS are just gimmicky RAM that provide only about a 1-3% RAM performance boost, for twice, or more, money. Just get 2 512 MB sticks of Corsair Value Select or Kingston ValueRAM DDR400/PC3200.

For the power supply, drop down to an Antec True430 or Enermax Noisetaker 420. They are both far more powerful than this system dictates, and a 600 MHz Enermax supply is TOTAL overkill.

I'd ditch the Audigy 2 as I don't really think they provide any real major difference over the (excellent) nForce 4 onboard sound.. especially for that price. Your call.

Other than that, good choices.

I have 2 questions then -
1) are there any downsides for having a bigger psu other than cost?
2) about how much higher can a 3500+ oc to compared to a 3200+?

if you want 600W go ahead... it won't hurt for sure and will be more future proof when you decide to get an SLI setup or something...

ok - so I will stick with my 600w PSU. This is how it looks so far then:

A64 3500+ venice core (when and if it comes out :p) OR 3200+ IF QUESTION IS ANSWERED
ATI x800xl GC
DFI "Lan Party) Ultra D
Seagate 250GB 7200rpm HDD
2x512 ram corsair valueselect
NEC 3250A dvd burner
Enermax EG701AX-VE 600w PSU
Sound Audigy 2 SC
Zalman copper HSF

any further suggestions/comments?
