Received a couple of emails from a friend about issues in playing his main games, The C & C series. As noted in his comments the only difference other than the new system, the BB refers to a NF7-S system I built for him, is the install of SP3. Wouldn’t think there would be a hardware issue, but open to suggestions there.

“Not sure what I did, tried to load command & conquer: Yuri’s revenge ( expansion pack) will load and install but will not play?”

“Tried the other CD’s no luck in that department still comes up with a “Fatal Error” however it does allow me to register and stuff, but to load not working for a game play no luck. Is their a way we can undo SP3 and only load SP2? I seem to recall everything worked on BB in SP2.”

I’m too software challenged to make any usefull suggestions other than SP3 being the problem.

Is this a new install......if it is then you have to run Yuri in windows 98 compat mode. There is a fix on microsofts website telling him how to fix it because i had the same problem.I had to change a few things and do a few tweaks but it runs just fine on my set-up but i dont think i have installed SP3. Gonna wait alil longer for a few fixes i have been hearing about. Hope that helps. :)

Go into the properties of the shortcut he uses to launch the game and set it to Win98 compatibility mode(like the poster above suggested). That should hopefully fix it.

yes, as others have said, with that game you will most likely have to run it in compatibility mode.

The issue is he had it running on another computer using XP Pro SP2 without problems. Don't think he had done the 98 thing but will ask him. The new build is a new install of XP Pro that has SP3.

If I understand correctly he needs to set it to emulate 98, etc?

There's an option in one of the tabs to run in compatibility mode. You check a box then pick the OS to simulate from a drop-down menu. I can't give you exact instructions since I'm running Vista, but it should be pretty easy to find.

If you read the white paper on SP3 it is pretty much just an update rollup for the normal user. There are only 2 or 3 new features added to XP from it and those should have no impact at all on gaming (they are mostly to make system admin's lives easier). So if he old XP install was completely up-to-date it should be no different than SP3.

That said, I think the above comments about enabling compatibility mode should fix your problem.

As he didn't have to do it on the older system (98 compatibility) and as there is nothing too critical on the hdd (just some test stuff to copy) we're going to reinstall w/o SP3 to confirm that it isn't on the SW side and maybe hardware.

Did you try the compatibility mode? It wont hurt to try and it take like a minute to try it out....

I received the indication that he did and either it he couldn't get to work or it wouln't work. When I get it back I give it a try first before I do anything. A guy over at gruntville supposedly has given me a way to dump SP3 without reformating so may give a try if this doesn't work. ;)

Yeah I think SP3 is just in add/remove updates. You may have to check "Show Updates" at the top, but it should be there I believe.
