Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3

I'm also impressed, and at this point, dare i say it, more excited about it than starcraft2.

Can't wait :D

We def need more games to justify video card puchases :D

Looking good, C&C (RA specifically) was one of my fave RTS series.

Yea, I'm really looking forward to Red Alert 3 this time over the other recent C&C's.

I don't know... this looks more futuristic than the other RA's. I liked the Red Alert series because it wasn't TOO unrealistic, I liked the feel of all of the GI's, Infantry, regular tanks and stuff like that. I don't know now that I see mech warriors and stuff like that... This may be the first RA I don't get.

anyone know when the RA3 beta is starting ??/

i signed up and got in when i got Kane's wrath expansion

Can't wait for this game. C&C3 is amazing, and this looks even better. It probably won't be as good as RA2, but that would be a pretty difficult feat to accomplish.

Hmm.... I don't know, its seems a little "anime" ish , they planes look like Gundam, I'm not sure about this one, like all things though I will give it a chance.

It looks ... ok.

It actually looks like another iteration of C&C to be honest. some of the baracks/factories even looked identical.

The biggest disappointment so far with every trailer Ive seen is the zoom is set to 3 inches above the ground, meaning you get to see about a dozen units on screen at once.

Hmmm.... no advances there then.

The one thing Supreme Commander brought to the RTS table they knocks all other RTS games off their perch... and they decide to ignore strategic zoom options. Even if they dont zoom all the way out... atleast you should be able to zoom out to see the battlemap.

So whilst it looks fun.... it also looks like it will have the same limitations as the C&C series. Oh.. and its bound to be dumbed down for the console kiddies too... all that new PC hardware released recently will be going to waste as the graphic engine looks just like C&C to be honest.

Sorry to piss on the 'We love RA3' parade... but it doesnt actually look that special. Which is a bloody shame, as we really need the next step in RTS evolution right now....

What IS the next step in RTS games? if there was one, I think blizzard or EA would have thought of it by now.

It's a heavily upgraded version of the SAGE engine(C&C3 engine), but it does look better than C&C3. Take a look at some of the other gameplay videos for better examples. The water effects in particular are really nice looking.

StarCraft 2 = Superb Balance no doubt, but same old restrictive zoom.

Next level of RTS for me would be conditional ordering.....

"Units A through C.... go to location C. If enemy attacks by plane, then deploy anti air units X, otherwise continue to deploy artillery"

As an example.
or

"Engineers... build this template fire base at this location, but if enemy spotted, retreat to here and build this unit"

or

"Engineers... if firebase comes under attack.. re-enforce the shields but continue to build X,Y,Z until then."

Countless examples could be thought of to be honest.

Ok, so let's say units A and C make it to C, and the enemy does attack by plane. But then your AA units happen to be near and they take out the enemy planes. Oh, but because of the conditions you sent your planes are coming happily to attack something that isn't there. then what? even more layered conditions that keep the planes from coming out based on enemy unit status? You're talking about an advanced AI that just simply isn't possible in a game where there are too many possibilites.

It would be mind-boggling to even imagine every possible bug that would come out of using advanced conditional AI.

Empire: Total War.

That is the next RTS im picking up after Red Alert 3. The Total War series were always fun just because of the whole conquer the world play style. Empire: Total War is looking like what a RTS would look like if it was on steriods.

I hope they dont make it too complicated.. I hate it when RTS's have too many units and shit to take care of, wich means like any game since the original Red Alert :(

Customizable unit AI, orders to attack enemies that enter area bounded by the patrol radius, etc.

For instance in SupCom if you have fighters patrolling around your base, the enemy can lure them all off with another fighter as they all swarm towards the first threat they see. This leaves your base very vulnerable to tactical bombers, and hard to fight without crazy micro. It could be easily fixed though if you could set a maximum number of units that can target the same enemy if there are other untargeted enemies in the same vicinity. Modifiable targeting priorities, better formation controls, etc... Think of something similar to using about:config in firefox, but with units instead.

I find it really disappointing that new RTS games do not have strategic zoom levels either. Locked cameras are the past, get over them.
