Project 4800. Read all about it here. Looks to be another collaboration, this time with Caltech. Page states "Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Sponsored By The Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund." So it defiantly sounds like something that I'll be following with great interest. I also looked up the fund, there's more about it here.

So let the irresponsible speculation start here. :D

Let me start with irresponsible speculations and say that Leganfuh will join us ;)

I meant about the project. But Leganfuh joining the [H]orde would be MUCH more newsworthy. :D

so this would be a whole new DC project or just a work unit you will be downloading?

Consider me perplexed and quite intrigued. Xil what have you heard on your inside line on this? I tried reading the page on the caltech website but frankly understood about every 3rd word.

New work unit or new client?

It would be nice to see PhysX brought into this. Lots of new games will be comming out to utilize this tech. PhysX is designed to accelerate exactly the type of modeling we are doing in Folding.

I'm just goofing around and pulling a speculation out of my ass (we can all dream, right ??) :p

I'll check more about that and I'll make a more "serious" comment ;)

In the near future we will release the first #N work units for Folding@Home beta testing. Most of the day, even when you are actively using your computer, only a fraction of the computing power is being used. By downloading the Folding@Home program, either the screensaver or the background-only version, you can donate the otherwise unused processing time to fundamental scientific research. Improved algorithms for high resolution protein structure prediction will be useful across the board, from engineering improved enzymes for biofuels to studying the molecular biophysics of biomedically relevant systems.

An interesting concept, using unused computer cycles to work on science. For any of you that have been at this folding thing for a number of years it might even sound vaguely familiar. Especially since it represents the entire basis of what was once the original folding@home project.

I’m not sure about you folk but I don’t have many unused or spare cycles left on my machines. Should be interesting to see where this project goes.
