I'm looking to upgrade my 8800GT. I have a card budget of $250 max, but I'd love to keep it lower. I play BC2, just bought Just Cause 2, and have Bioshock 2, Mass Effect, Oblivion, and the Witcher on my back burner. My main screen is 1680x1050, though I have a 42" 1080P tv that I occasionally like to hook up for BC2. I don't really use AA/AF much with my 8800GT on modern games, though if my card can run them then I do enable better settings.

I considered the 460s when they came out, but then I decided to wait to see what the 6870s had to offer. Now 460s are going for $135 in places and Newegg has a 6850 for $155AR. I don't think the 6850 will play BC2 well enough for my preferences, though maybe I'm overestimating my expectations.

I'd like to fit a SSD into a video card+SSD budget of maybe $350 which is why I'd rather not pay $240 for a 6870 (they ought to be much closer to $200 now that the 6950 is out, IMO). If I could find one for $200-$210 I think that would be a decent enough deal...

Ideas/discussion? Has anyone gone from an 8800GT to the current generation, especially in the range I've discussed, and what were your impressions?
 
how about a 5870? I had an 8800GT, SLIed it, got a 4870 1GB, and then just picked up a 5870. The 5870 runs games just fine at 1680*1050, and even Metro 2033 looks decent on this. Of course, you can run decent levels of AA and AF on it as well.
Gameplay is definitely smoother, less jerky than it was with the SLIed 8800GTs. The 4870 1GB was a good card as well, but higher levels of AA and AF on the 5870 make a difference for sure.
 
I would have to go with either a 6870, 5870, 460 1gb or a 4701gb

if you go with a 470 it comes with Mafia 2 for free & the 460 1gb (Non SE version) comes with just cause 2. I am currently sick of AMD and there drivers. Im about to go back to nvidia period. They may run hotter and use more power but ive never dealt with this crap with amd before
 
I see that Newegg is offering a Sapphire 5870 for $250 after $30MIR... Hmm...

Or, I could get a 470 for $245 without MIRs.

With both of these, I'm assuming my PSU would hold up.
 
I'd be wary of the 470 considering your PSU. A GTX460 1GB or 6850 is more than enough for your resolution anyhow.
 
I went from 8800GT SLi to a GTX460 1GB and couldn't be happier. Great performance and waaaay better temps.
 
I went from an 8800GT to a HD 6870 on the same resolution. Haven't really tried anything new with it besides WoW: Cataclysm but I have seen noticeable gains. I can do 8x AA now instead of 4x AA and have shadows on High instead of Good but the CPU (AMD Phenom 9600) is really holding me back from increasing the viewing distance from Good to Ultra. At least, I think it is.

The card was bought for WoW,ME3/DA2 and the rest of the Starcraft II games along with possibly Civ 5 (I'd buy Alpha Centauri 2 in a heart beat).

Definitely a worthwhile purchase for me. I also plan on going to 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 in the future as well. I bought the card to last me two years so maybe I should have waited for the 6950 since it came out cheaper then I expected. That's really the only drawback for me so far.
