I'm considering moving over to comcast for my ISP because I'm paying AT&T $40/month for 3 Mb/s download speed and around .45 Mb/s upload speed. I have 3 questions:

1. Is this move a good idea?

2. Should I get a modem or router or both?

3. What is a good suggestion for a router?

I know that Comcast has a list of their DOCSIS 3.0 devices but I wasn't sure which one to go with. Here is a link to the list they provided:http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net//?s=c&so=1&e=0&d3=1&tier=2&sc=571

If you wanna save the $7, good idea, any of the recommended modems will be good just check reviews in your area.

Quality of Comcast will depend on your neighborhood.. ask your friends. To be honest I can't complain too much because for the price the speed and uptime is great with my connection.

Get a separate router so you can get all the features you want or try out m0n0wall or pfSense.
 
Thanks for the advice. I couldn't see anything wrong on dslreports.com about comcast but I also had a hard time navigating their website. Anything I should be looking for specifically?
 
I use a motorola surfboard 6120 and a cisco RV110W-A-NA-K9 router. Its been working well for me for a while now.

When you get the Comcast business account, you usually are given their combo modem/router device (gateway)..the SMC Gateway. They are usually reluctant to have the standard home grade modems on their business network, for monitoring/maint reasons.

However, the SMC gateway is very simple to setup your own router on, so that your own router gets the public IP address.

People can argue about how "good" Comcast is, but I don't recall any time in the last 10 years that Comcast wasn't better than the respective DSL options in a given area. Normal DSL tops out at about 6-7Mbps and that is a best-case scenario. That just isn't fast enough anymore. Even a "bad" Comcast connection should be better than that.

What router are you using now? Assuming your existing DSL modem isn't plugged directly into your computer? For a modem go with the SB6120 IMO.

I got the impression from the OP that he was signing up for standard Comcast Residential (XFinity), no?
 
I have had the Arris TM722 for the past couple years and have had no problems whatsoever.
 
I work for C***** (lets sensor :p), and I have Verizon fiber :D
Not happy about their business practice.

I've had Comcast for about 12 years now and besides the free HD cable and internet when I had a room mate that worked for them, I would go elsewhere if I could. Now my wife and I go back and forth each year on who has the account so we can keep getting their promo prices. I had the account in my name for 8 years and when I called them because I thought my bill was too high, I was told they couldn't do anything for me because they lost enough money on my account. I have been in both sales and customer service over the past decade and am new to this sales tactic.

That's only the shell. I'm talking deeper, in which I cannot discuss. To the OP, if you can, your better off with some other ISP.
 
Thank you all for your advice. Yes I am planning on getting the residential package for Comcast. I am currently using one of AT&T's 2-Wire Gateway modems which functions as my router as well since it has wireless capabilities.

In terms of why I'm going with Comcast, AT&T has a really hard and confusing billing and online capabilities. I've had been on the phone with them for around 2-3 hours once because their setup process is confusing and I did not "access" to view my bill. Another reason why I'm switching is speed and price. As I said before, my speed is horrible and I'm paying around the same price as Comcast's introductory price. So "why pay the same and get slower speeds" is my thought.

Although I have heard from those of you who have posted in this thread and from others on dslreports.com about Comcast, there are really no other options to me other than these two ISPs. The closest ISP to me is about 150 miles away. There really are no other local ISPs in my area unfortunately.

The modem I decided to get is the Motorola SB6121. Any concerns on this one?
Also, I was looking at getting the Buffalo Technology Airstation AC1300 / N900. Any concerns? Here's a link to newegg's product details on it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833162067

Again I want thank you all for your help. As I said in the OP, I am currently using AT&T. It is only DSL however and we originally signed up for the 6 mbps package ($40/month) and they told us our location could not/would not support that speed so we actually get 3 mbps at the same price. The only way we can get a faster speed is if we upgrade to a higher priced plan and I believe the highest speeds listed on their site barely matches the slowest speeds that Comcast offers. I am hesitant to go to Comcast as well because of the whole giant corporation dilemma and things I've heard from others online and friends, but it seems a better alternative to AT&T.

Looking on dslreports.com I haven't found any local ISPs that will provide a comparable price and service or speed. The closest ISP other than AT&T and Comcast is about 150 miles away from me. This is why I'm considering Comcast.

Guess so....I read "Comcast router/modem" and immediately my brain jumped to the SMC gateway so I assumed biz class.

In the case of a home user, another vote for the venerable Moto Surfboard lineup...currrently the 6120 series.

As for home router....Cisco 4200, Netgear wndr4500, dlink 2000 or 3000, Asus r656 or rt66.
