okay i am using a ricochet modem in southern San Diego, and it connects to the network at 460.8kbps. Now my max com port speed is 115kbps, is there a way to tweak it so it can go higher?

You could always get broadband.

I think your reporting your speed a little wrong if your using a dial up modem. Like the decimal point is in the wrong spot.

Ricochet was a broadband wireless service that went under a while back, so Who are you connecting to? Richchet modems were not comm port based, they were PCMCIA/PCI, so max comm speed is irrelevant. Please fill in the gaps here, if your using a regular dial up modem made by a company that has nothing to do with the richochet broadband wireless service your mis reporting you connection speed.

It's a ricochet modem.. it's not a phone line modem, it's wireless. In theory they are offering/planning to offer high speed service over it. however, you can't put the serial port over 115, so if some genius put 512k service on the other end of it.. well they are an idiot.

The original modems were about 28.8 equivalent, and the serial connection was perfectly reasonable.

Interesting... When this company when under a lot of the users tried to buy it out (service was VERY usefull when it was available, you think crackberries are bad...) but failed. It looks like they found a buyer, a lot later...

But the PDF is missing from the site. Looks like it's only available in San Diego and Denver.

What types of modems are available?
Ricochet has external and internal PC Card modems. They use standard serial, USB and PC Card (PCMCIA) communications interfaces. Ricochet modems are portable, compact and rugged and are easy to install and use. They connect with a desktop, laptop or PDA.

It does look like serial modems are available, but I would want to know why when their connect speeds are supposed to be faster than the throughput of the port.

4-6 times dialup is way over 115kbps. Of course they are not listing the actual connect speeds...

Yes, now I remember seeing something about them. And yeah, COM speed shouldn't matter.
