I calibrated my pc monitors with dispcal gui and a spyder4, I was wondering if I could calibrate a HDTV in the same way? I run a 50" HDTV off of my PC as a 3rd monitor, but i've read all over that your supposed to get special software and disks to calibrate a HDTV. Why can't I just do it like I did with my monitors?
 
I may be way off here but I assume that the special discs and software are for calibrating the TV using the controls of the TV itself, making the TV calibrated for all input sources. If you calibrate using dispcalgui you only get some minor help in setting the overall controls of th TV, affecting all inputs. You do however get a nice calibrated picture when using the PC input of the TV.

A free alternative for calibrating the TV controls is the HCFR software, which I just started to play with myself so I can't say much about it.

As I said I may be off the road here, but this is my current understanding.
 
HCFR is fine since it indicates if the the RGB levels and gamma need to be changed, and, unlike calibration discs, one can verify if changing settings makes a difference objectively via measurements.
 
Yes you can calibrate it with your spyder however, it wont actually change any setting in your tv but rather store new settings on your pc so the calibration wont take affect unless your input source is your pc.
 
You need access to the service menu to properly calibrate , otherwise you can just create a color profile to load on boot.
