Hi, first a general question. Is there anything that can be done to reduce or eliminate the effect of color banding on a display?

I have an X1900XT and an FPD2185W. I always kind of ignored color banding, but somebody pointed it out that my monitor shows significant color banding whenever there is a sky. Be it the sky in a game, movie, or photo. Anyway, now it's all I can think about. I wish I could go back to ignoring it but it stands out so much now. Huge eye sore. That picture shows a lot of color banding for me. Is it just my display or is color banding a very common issue that just isn't as noticeable on some displays/configurations?

I have tried different monitors, drivers, resolutions, and refresh rates. I even messed with contrast/brightness to make it less noticeable. In the end it is still there and just as noticeable no matter what I have tried. Banding effect was exactly the same between my monitor through dvi and an old trinitron crt through vga (both hooked up to the same card). This has made me question whether or not it is actually my video card doing this.

Do video cards have any effect on color banding or is it only a problem with displays?

Later I'm going to try my lcd through vga to see if that does anything. Then I'm going to hook it up to a couple other pc's to see if it is any different with other video cards.

Any thoughts on color banding anybody wants to share?
 
2185w user here on an X1900XTX. This display does not have very much banding for me. That picture is just a crappy compressed JPEG. I'm using dual monitors and there is banding on my CRT with that picture.

This display does have color shifting and black crush, but banding? Not so much in my experience.
 
The only significant change in colour which I can clearly see in that pic is about half way up the tree. Using an LG L204WT.

I'd also be interested to know if hardware calibration has any effect on banding.

Ignore the green line on the top and left of those screens if you look at them. That is an unfortunate side effect of adaptive aa in that game. I don't know if those screenshots are good examples because I heard that game has a crappy sky to begin with. However, I do not believe it should look THAT bad. The screens are bmp format in 1680x1050. Anyway, just google image search color gradients or use photoshop or something.


Point is I hate color banding and I'm wondering if I took one comment too seriously or if my vid card/monitor cannot smoothly display a gradient of color.
 
I dled your rar, and on my S-IPS 2007WFP A04 it has pretty obvious banding. To do a real test just make some gradients in photoshop or use a website like this one.

In the gradient test on that website I get a tiny hint of incorrect colour, but no actual banding, and my monitor is running stock colour config.

Most games will band no matter what you are running unfortunately, even thought they claim to be running in 32 bit colour :/
 
Neat website and yeah I see banding on gradients. So is it my display that's responsible for the banding? Is there nothing I can do about it? Next time I buy a monitor I will keep this information in mind.

Wow that sucks. I wonder why it isn't that big of a deal. Every time I look at a sky in a game now all I can do is sigh and pretend like it doesn't bother me. Recently reinstalled BF2 and it was the first thing I noticed.
