Colo vs Dedicated

It seems these days that dedicated is cheaper then Colo... however i have a server that i could use for Colo...

could someone explain to me how and where any savings might come from with doing colo... because i honestly am only seeing more money being spent... but i think i'm missing something in that regard...
 
IMO, dedicated will always be cheaper than colo because of the simple fact that the company can get the extra money on support of their own servers instead of allowing you to support your own, but on their backbone of power/climate/network.
 
so why go with colo then?... i can get a server with equal specs to mine and more bandwidth for the same price as a colo spot and less bandwidth... i just don't see the logic in colo... anyone?

root access? How much administrative power will you have over the dedicated server, also, what about adding Hard disk space, etc. with Colo you can set it up exactly how you like it, but with Dedicated, they set it up how they like it. Its about how much power you want/need over your server(s).
 
Exactly what Xipher said. Colo is your computer. You can put what you want on it. You are the one who decides what specs it gets. Dedicated you are limited to what the company offers, you don't usually ever get root. You don't decide what OS it gets (other than the basics, I'm speaking like fancy OS), as in you can't decide to put Lindows on it, or Gentoo, or something other than usually Mandrake (rarely), Red Hat, or Windows 2000/2003.
 
Yea, Red Hat, Windows, or sometimes FreeBSD, are what you will end up with, and you might get a choice between those, but not always.
 
Colo has advantages, esp if you want different hardware than they are willing to sell you, as in, maybe you want a Sun (yeah right ;-) ), or a quad Opteron
