I thought it might be interesting to post what happened to me few days ago. I was working on my new pc, and all of a sudden there was this weird smell coming from around my xpc. I thought it could be new dell 2005FP monitor, as its new and new things tend to have weird smell first few days untill they burn in. So i continued working on new machine, and 1 hour later, i turned off my xpc as i wanted to take hard drive out and put it into my new pc, and there it was, cold cathode inventor was in flame, half melted, and cold cathode was burned.

Funny thing was, pc was still running, and i have no idea what caused the flame. I bought it on SVC.com few weeks back, brand new thing...
 
stories like this make me want to dump my cathodes... ive just heard too many stories about inverters going bad.
 
I've got a box of fried CCT inverters. The ones you get with kits are usually crap. After realizing that and purchasing an individual inverter I haven't had a problem since.
 
i just turn it on when people are over. other than that, its off. *bling bling*
 
i would just be really mad if the whole pc caught the fire... and its svc branded inventer.. it would be a great lawsuit case

Any sugestions on an inverter and where to get one. Probably bad googling on my part, but I'm only pulling up one's in kits. and I would love to find one to support 4 cathods
 
I've never seen a single inverter that supports 4 CCTs other than that panel mount thing. Check FrozenCPU, Xoxide, Performance-PCs, VoyeurMods, etc. Most of them sell inverters (some of them even have LEDs inside the inverter for 5% more bling factor).
 
Ok.. this post kind of scares me. I ordered two 12" UV Cold Cathodes yesterday and now I'm hesistant of sticking them in there.
 
I have multiple UV's and they are fine, but the thing is, whats the point of having them on if its not dark and/or there are no people there?

I barely ever turn them on.

although it may have been random, chances are you did something to help it along ;) some common ones are: hooked it into a fan bus, tried to extend the high tension wires, tried to wire it up yourself, or wraped it up with something as to prevent airflow... anything ring a bell?

Same here ... I just have them to show off the pc if I need to .. otherwise I resort back to my red and blue led lights
 
Same thing happened to me but I caught it before it caught on fire. I smelled an electrical burn and checked my pc sure enough the inverter was real hot so I took it out. Then I saw that the ends of the CCFL were brown as if they were starting to burn from the inside.After this I gave up with CCFLs. I use meteor lights now. LEDs only in all my systems.
 
.... I hid my inverter in my hdd cage... right next to my single hard drive... I would kill something if it exploded and burnt up my ONLY drive... :(

i generally have them on all the time except if i leave it on when i sleep (rarely)...
 
This is known to happen with both inverters and the CCFL tubes themselves. Last time I took my PC apart (Stupid thing won't POST... danged video card) I checked the tube, and sure enough, it was starting to char on one end. So needless to say, that tube is sitting on my desk. I pity the soul who thinks "Oh, free cold cathode" and walks away with it :D
 
So if you're worried, why not just cut a fuse holder into the wiring going to the inverter? Tube fuse holders are fairly cheap at radio shack, and the fuses are even cheaper. Couple minutes and 2cents worth of heat shrink, and you have peace of mind. :D

I did that with my first computer, for some lights I put in. Didn't know whether to trust the lights or not (man, I look back on those days and think, "What a noob!!" ;) LOL), so spent a buck and got peace of mind. :cool:
