Video plays in VLC but not Premier Elements, Windows Media Player...
Figuring it's a codec issue but how do I tell what it needs??

This doesn't work for all media files, but you can try it (WinXP):

Right click the media file and select properties. Click the "Summary" tab and you should see a section that says "Video." Within that section, you should be able to find out what codec you need (ex: Video compresssion: XVID).

That's what I had assumed- but no info there. Don't know if it's just Vista or the file itself.

I found some software called ffdshow that at least lets me look at it- yet when I'm trying to render this stuff I think this would seriously hurt me in regards to taking forever (That and all the background processes).

How about this...

Start up the file with VLC and select the "View" menu. From there, click the "Advanced information" tab. From a video file I am checking, Stream 0 is the video and it mentions the codec as XVID.
