COD4 PC Server browser problems

this is really starting to get to me.

I've reinstalled COD4 numerous times for Numerous reasons. i tried running the game without a sound card at one point cause the nboard sound on this PC shorted out. i took the sound drivers out, never realized it NEEDED the sound card. dumbass me.

anyway

so now i pop my audigy 2 ZS in, game starts and runs ok.

but it runs ok.

its really stuttery, and like. i'm not sure it doesn't make sense. my moms PC runs this game fine, her system is not as good.

heres the specs:
AMD Opteron 146 OC'd to 2.5 ghz (for now)
512MB RAM (yes i know this is a bottle neck, but i have no more money)
Radeon X850 Pro (my moms PC has the same card)

when i start the game, and go to the server browser it seems to be running fine.
but when i click rfresh server list, it starts refreshing, MAD SLOW. i'm talking instad of 100 per second its doing maybe 30 per second. its so freakin slow, i cannot figure out whats wrong. tried both onboard ethernets, tried reinstalling drivers, checked the internet speed (used speedtest, then compared it to another computer in the same network), ran 3d mark 03 and came up with 11107 points, good enough when looking at the futuremark orb.

so its isolated to call of duty.

but why won't it work? i mean the freakin game runs great on my Athlon XP 1700+ @ 2.2ghz with 512MB's RAM and a 9600XT, i mean. come on, somethings gotta give.

i've reinstalled windows 4 times already, used different ahrd drives, etc.

ideas?

its happening with quake 4 too! its mad slow when it searches for servers! i don't know what to do.

Is your mom's pc on the same network? Maybe you have a router issue with port forwarding and she don't?

maybe. i was considering maybe its the network connection to her PC, since i trieds 3 different network cards, and new drivers for each one twice.

i'll give that a shot, maybe plug my sisters cable into my PC once its fixed, if mine does it then its the port of the router... wierd...

any other ideas?

Its just the master servers. Try using Xfire for server browsing and I bet your problem will go away.

The master server protocol that the Quake engine uses has always been kind of tricky and known to have problems

how come i don't ahve these problems on my computer with COD4? granted i use an Intel E2180 system and such (system in my sig).`

i switched my computer from a static IP to dynamic..

i donno why that worked, but it did

If I refresh the server list in COD4, my entire internet connection dies - HTTP wise. All other protocols work fine... talking on voip as it refreshes - and webpages across the house refuse to load.

i'm on dynamic i think...

maybe its the Nforce chipset dealing with the network in general. i'll try setting up a static IP, that might fix it.

also add

28960 on TCP & UDP. to your router...also add it to your software firewall

i would recommmend not using 2 firewalls....your not any more protected behind 1 firewall then you are behind a million

yeah i have a router, i usually use a software firewall as well (Vista firewall for my PC, windows firewall for most others). however, this computer has the nfroce 4 chipset, so i used the active armor firewall implemented into the chipset, but its disabled now, and it still does it.

disable all software firewalls.

Also, try plugging in your pc directly to your modem (cable/dsl).
