Anyone know if they are going to have dedicated servers? Also, anyone who has multiple consoles, how do the pc versions of CoD stack up to the consoles? I played MW, WaW and MW2 all on the ps3, but i'm debating picking up Black Ops for the pc instead so me and my brother can play together.

Yes, Black Ops will have dedicated servers. As for the rest, I can't answer that. I don't play FPS games on consoles. Not when I can buy the same game on the PC. Even if the game is little more than a port, it at least has better controls.

Dedicated servers with one company (GameServers) who happens to be the shittiest GSP out there. Seriously, play on any of their BC2 or MoH servers and try to tell me with a straight face you had a good time. In both games, CONSTANT lag on their servers while other GSPs (MyIS in particular) are awesome.

I would hope there's some kind of a quality clause in the agreement (max X servers per box) but since this is Activision, who has never cared about quality in the past, I doubt it.

This. I'll be getting it on the PC. I've had no problems with GameServers in the past either.

Ah, well i'm kind of a noob to online fps games. I played BC2 on the pc, though, and never really had any problems with servers. No idea even what the difference is between dedicated servers and not, to be honest.

The main thing i'm worried about is that I read a lot of stuff about MW2 servers with hacks and crap when you tried joining the server, and it has me somewhat hesitant about buying Black Ops for the pc.

I didn't really do any in-depth searching about MW2 on the pc though as I already had it for the ps3, so maybe i'm just being silly?

GameServers.com is so so in my experience. What is bugging me is, it is less then a week before release and no one has posted the official player count for servers (gameservers.com has a 18 ranked, 24 max unranked, but no official word yet). Hoping we can get some ranked 32 man up for some fun and then smaller tac servers, 16-24 player. No more fucking 12 player servers on p2p, thank you.

EDIT: NOW OFFICIAL, Bestbuy developer chat (going on now), 18 players ranked (depending on playlist) and up to 24 players unranked.

That developer chat has made me incredibly happy about the PC version. I mean, it's really only going back to CoD4 levels of customization, but we'll be getting Treyarch's post-release support (which is great) as well, so this should definitely make MW2 obsolete.

Naw, no playlist mixing, so no Tac, HC TDM/S&D servers :(

Pretty sure you'll be able to do that in Unranked servers, though. At least that's sort of what they said in the chat.

Unranked or Ranked for tatical realism servers on the pc?
DavidVo
For a PC gamer, I would think you would be happier with Unranked. Ranked does have hardcore and barebones, however. That's fairly tatical in nature.

Passing. I just don't feel like it's targeting my demographic. I'm waiting for White ops.

The reason why there are hacks in MW2 is because its multiplayer is based on a P2P system where the person with the fastest internet hosts the match. They can then insert hacks to get different things. Dedicated servers should get rid of most of these issues and make it a lot more stable (wont get disconnected from games all of the time). Thats the way it is on pc anyways.

Debating buying this. Hell, I probably will buy it release day, just seeing the general consensus before I pull the trigger.

Such great news. I'm even more pumped for next week , 7 days away!

Graphics and sound wise the PC versions are pretty much the same as the consoles. The only major difference really is player base size and controller preference.

For MW2 it was all P2P for multiplayer so that wasn't a factor in terms of which version was any better. In fact if you take out controller preference from the equation the Xbox version would probably, in my opinion, be deemed "best" due simply to the amount of players. More players, bigger community, more clans, more competition etc.

I'm really looking forward to the replay theater. I used to have fun making gifs of frags from UT2k4 and sharing them with friends, but since then I haven't played a game that made it quite so easy.

Dedicated servers will get rid a lot of the ass hattery that goes on.

I'm debating renting one and running it the way I ran my old Counter Strike server out of my bedroom. I called it Zero Lame and I had zero tolerance for anyone's bullshit.

I banned for cheating, hacks, dumb ass nick names (things like Jew Smasher 69 etc). I even banned AFKers and habitual campers. My Wow ID ban list grew daily and I still had a good group of daily regulars.

I think you should go for it, a [H] Black Ops server, no bull.

In fact, i bet you'd get donations for it as well. If the connection is good, i'll join in from the UK (assuming you're in the US).

Quick thread hijack....

I pre-loaded B.O. from steam last night. I am sure you guys already know, but just in case.

That's gay. They need 32, 48 and 64 player games.

With 64 player games on these map sizes, your average life expectancy would be ~1 second.

Anyway, I already rented a server based in Dallas like I mentioned in the other thread.

The only rules are going to be:
-Don't be an idiot (complaining about weapons, constantly saying "bs" after dying, racism, etc).
-Accusing someone of hacking without proof nets you a ban.

48 player matches on Crash in CoD 4 were pretty awesome. Your point is well taken though. And as far as rules go, that sounds pretty reasonable.

I actually like that as long as theres instant respawn. Dust 2 Deathmatch all the waaay.

I think 32 players is my limit. Anything else and it just gets way too crowded; you're better off camping in any random hallway.

People that have been playing the leaked 360 release say the single player is definitely longer than MW2's and pretty entertaining, but the story is still insane.

I've always prefered smaller matches on FPS apart from the Battlefield games and the original CoD as the maps were MUCH bigger.
Can't be doing with clusterfuck matches

I've purchased every CoD game on the day of release, including the crapper that is MW2, so I dont think i'll stop with black ops. I love these games and always have. Now, im actually more excited than usual b/c of the return of ded servers.

I don't know why they can't come up with a semi-decent story for this sort of thing. Tom Clancy does it all the time. The idea of Russian Extremists with towels wrapped around their faces invading U.S. soil is ludicrous. Despite that I do enjoy that level of MW2 where you can take cover in the convenience store, the taco place, the burger place and the bank.

Fight on US soil was something that gave me the heeby jeebies. SO I think it was effective even though a bit ridiculous. And we never assume that anyone can invade the US, so it's interesting to break that subconscious barrier in most people's minds.

I think because the scenario in modern times is comical. Even mild disturbances in the American economy hurts the rest of the world because we are 90% import 10% export. America literally doesn't have any resources beyond farmland that the rest of the world wants. Even the terrorism that we depend on for our game plots are based on Revenge or ideological differences. I'm not trying to get political or soapboxy this s all fact based.

IMO the only game that has successfully pulled off a realistic invasion scenario was "Freedom Fighters" but to do that they to do an Alternate history in which America is a struggling holdout against the combined communist regimes.

Sigh getting nostalgic for Freedom Fighters again..

also getting deja vu. Haven't we discussed this before?

If it has native eyefinity/surround support (talking centered HUD too) I will buy it. I played CoD4/5 on the PC and enjoyed them a lot, but I don't want to mess with WideScreenFixer and the possibility of a VAC ban based on trying to get it to run correctly on 3 screens.

I hear that, I'm a suck for CoD
