Yeah, I just bought myself one of those new gigabyte 939 motherboards. I have my 2 optical ports used on the reciever so i decided to go digial coax. However, I find the 5.1 not becoming enabled when I do any tests, If i put in a 5.1 game, will it enable 5.1?
 
Make sure 5.1 output is enabled in your computer's sound options. Even then it may only output 5.1 if you've got a game going that supports it. Try loading up Doom 3 or FarCry, something with surround sound and see how it goes.
 
It might have worked on your Chaintech if it had SoundStorm, but your new GigaByte board cannot digitally encode your audio into a 5.1 format that your receiver can understand (Dolby Digital or DTS). Your motherboard is only capable of sending a 2 channel PCM signal to your receiver so everything will be in stereo.

If your receiver has 6 discrete inputs (RCA connectors for each audio channel) then you can connect it with analog cables (1/8th" stereo to RCA Y-adapters) and you'll get full surround without problems, but I recommend getting a new soundcard for better quality.
