cmos bios self resetting

I have a old SIS k75a mobo with an Amd 2000+xp cpu inthe drivers seat.

Occasionally ( it is intermitant enough that I cannot find a pattern and am almost tempted to say "at random") at boot up the screen says 'checksum error ....cmos reset to default' ( or something similar) it has done this since it was new a couple of years ago and does seem to have ever gotten any better or wrose .

It is not really a problem , just for this particular machine I occasionally have to reset the bios options .

My question is what are the most likely causes of this ( computer is rarely ever off for more than 7 or 8 hours ) and have any of you run into a similar situation .

I ask because I am curious if the spuratic nature is due to a bad capacitor ( possibly direct shorting and grounding or dumping or whatever the cmos ) ?, a faulty bios chip ( what would some of the the other indications be )? or some other oddity of which I am clueless ?

thanks in advance for the suggestions

Your motherboard battery might be dead, or is dying, and if your mobo uses jumpers to reset then you need to check them for any gaps, or if any of them are in the wrong place. Its probably your cmos battery.

ahh , yes ,

damn you know i though of that and then for some reason completely forgot the thing is battery and not capacitor fed , thanks I'l give it a shot .

Pretty common problem...I'll give you a link you can check out...there is a hardware mod to fix it and also a few other things you can do...the easiest thing to try is a good name brand power supply with a beefy +5VSB line..or flash to the latest official or overclocking bios.

There is no rhyme nor reason to that problem sometimes...
