OK, I want to get a couple mini-itx board and make a 4 board cluster. 1 controller and 3 nodes(I think). I know that F@H works one core at a time, but could that one core send its data to all the rest of the systems...(like when you were a senior in high school and got told to do something, so in turn you told 3 freshman to do it cause it would be done faster).
 
I understand the concept you would like to run with this, but with F@H, you won't be able to do it. The closest you can come is with Mage's "Fold-Server" which has one computer with hdd, that runs F@H, and can load the other clients via the network, and save all the data on one hard drive.
 
Stanford is working on a version of the program that can use multiple processors and multiple computers at the same time, but it's still in development.

I'd like SMP capability first, than we can move on to cluster capabilities...

Any news on when that may be available for testing? I would have this for awhile, and I could always use it for DVD encoding. :D

GROMACS ON SYMMETRIC MULTIPROCESSOR (SMP) BOXES

SMP boxes are already fairly common and with the release of dual core CPUs, we expect this to be getting even more common. To make FAH run one core calculation on a SMP box, there are several challenges to overcome. One of the most prominent is the scalability of the GROMACS core. For most codes (GROMACS included), one does not get a 4x speed increase on 4 processors, due to some inefficiencies of scaling. Also, there are some unique challenges server-side, since GROMACS requires load balancing done in code that currently runs server side in FAH. Our primary collaborator here is Prof. Charlie Peck (Earlham College, Computer Science Dept). Prof. Peck has been working on ways to easily run GROMACS on clusters and SMP machines in conjunction with Folding@Home.

July 2005 We have two approaches to solving the SMP problem and are experimenting with them in parallel. Both are pretty early stage, but appear to work reasonably well in the lab. The biggest challenge right now appears to be server side.

August 2005 Abhay has been making steady progress here. We are trying two approaches: a pure SMP approach as well as an approach which would also work on computer clusters. There are pros and cons of each and having both programs allows us to take the best version.

September 2005 Abhay has found that we need to change the Gromacs codebase used. We're working on the switch with Prof. Peck's group.

November 2005 We have had some snags with the code. Prof. Peck will be coming out to Stanford in early 2006 and that should help push this through.


 
Yup that's what I was talking about. I guess it's not clusters and SMP, but just SMP boxes, slipped up. Sorry if I got anyones hope up.

 
I took it as there is going to be 2 different clients...one for SMP and another for clusters...?
 
Yeah, I guess they do mention both clusters and smp boxen, but they also say they are developing both and going to take the best option. The problem is those information boxes are vary old. The top one hasn't been update in a long time, and their forums are super slow also. I think we just need to accept that they are working on it, and it'll get done in due time. They don't want to rush anything, because everything has to compute everything correctly, and the computations have to be varified and so on. So I'm thinking that this is a slow process, and specialized people have to work on this.

I think your best option right now if you want to setup a farm or "cluster" of somesort is to either run Mage's foldserver and have the main computer distibute wus to the boxen, or to set up each boxen with a hard drive, and run Foldix or some other operating system on each.

 
thats pretty [H], but I am going to build mine with mini-itx boards, so its small and easy to take wherever...I just want something to paly with... I am thinking I will use Rocks cluster software...
