I have a 300G SATA Maxtor DiamondMax 10 fresh from RMA. The drive is a single partition, and will be used for bulk storage of MP3s, divx, program ZIPs, ISOs, etc. In other words, most files are at least 2mb, and alot 700-900mb.

When I formatted to NTFS, I set the cluster size to 4k so it wouldn't be too too high for smaller files (If I install games to the storage drive) or too low and therefore slow for my MP3s and dvix. I will also use this drive to store recording from my PVR (big files).

With 300gb and only 20ish used, it isn't critical that I get to use each and every cluster effeciently.

Was 4k a good compromise, or should I have gone higher or lower?
 
A) 4K is the default, and is the absolute largest size you can use and still have access to all NTFS utilities in Windows
B) The performance gains from tweaking allocation unit size on todays hard drives are slim to none
C) Making it too small will waste space anyway.

I'd leave it at 4K and call it a day.
 
Id agree, and about the only reason to overide the default I can think of would be for say a dedicated media partition w\ large multimedia files. ;)
(and wouldnt have any real performance impact simply less housekeeping
