Cloudbook

That thing is hideous. I'd also rather get the eee due to the ssd.

Its good. Storage, portability, and good battery life. The Via chips are not speed demons, but they get the job done and use next to nothing for power consumption.

I would like to hear more discussion on this mobile laptop as well. I am looking into an Asus Eee PC, and saw this one with bigger screen, faster proc, bigger storage.. etc.

Other than looks, which one is better?

It looks good, but I'm waiting for the next gen VIA processor to be used. Shouldn't be too long hopefully since it's pin-compatible. Also, I've had problems with the UniChrome video not being great in Windows. Hopefully the memory is user-upgradeable, 2GB isn't that expensive and would be a great upgrade. And the 30GB drive is nice - SSD drives are too small (unless you want to pay $1000+) to install an OS, music, a few movies, maybe a game or two, etc. I like the concept of the SSD, it's just that big enough drives aren't cheap yet.

1.2GHz VIA C7-M < Intel Celeron 900Mhz
30GB (4200rpm PATA) HDD < 4GB/8GB SSD
DVI port > VGA port
7" WVGA TFT Display = 7" WVGA TFT Display

Go for the Eee PC. :)

Actually I read that the new Via chipsets are pretty fast, but I will wait for the benchmarks. Some reviewers are saying that the low power models will play Crysis.

The screen size is the same as on the ASUS EeePC.

Need to bump this. Looking for a Cloudbook v EEE pc review.

Here's one on YouTube, but there's plenty more out there. Search over at the notebookreview forums.

I was hoping the EeePC prices would drop when the Cloudbook was released, but since it was delayed that didn't happen. After seeing the reviews and comparisons, I still think the EeePC is better.

I bought a new Dell M1330 in December, but sent it back because of the horrible high pitch noises it made. Other than the noise, the M1330 was nice, but I realized I really didn't need a notebook that powerful and all I ever used my old notebook for was to check email from a hotel. I never took my old notebook out of the hotel because it was too big and heavy to lug around, and the M1330 was just barely smaller, though it was much lighter, than my old non widescreen 14" notebook.

I have been waiting for a refund from Dell before ordering, and I just ordered my EeePC which will be here today. I would liked to have waited for the next generation of cheap UMPC's with bigger screens to come out before buying, but I need something now. I will be out of town the first week of March and another week in April and again in May, so went ahead and bought an EeePC 4G when I got my refund.

I was also looking at buying one of these. Looks like a fairly good deal, but i'm not sure if it's gonna be worth the extra money over an eeepc.

If I could buy one of these locally at walmart (they're only going to be sold on the website... right??) I would be more apt to purchase one (as i would be able to return it then)

When you compare it to the asus, i think they both have advantages/disadvantages.

The eee has a better input device (bigger touchpad in more normal location)
I am also more partial to the ASUS name (PB/everex not so much...)

The cloudbook wins in my book in the storage category, granted the asus uses a ssd, but i think the extra space of the cloudbook would be nice. (I think this depends on how intensely the purchases plans to use te notebook.)

I don't like the screen on either notebook, from past experiences i know it gets annoying to have to side scroll through webpages.

To me, both computers have enough downfalls for me to wait for the next generation. I am really hoping for a bigger screen for both, and a better trackpad/mouse button setup on the cloudbook.

There are plenty of videos and even reviews on you tube. The biggest turn off to me, is the horrible pad placement. Top right? Poor idea, imo. I know why they did it, just dont agree with it. Its also tiny.

correct except for the HDD

swap the HDD with a 1.8" SSD and you will blow away the EEE PC
also DVI-I is both DVI-D and DVI-A/VGA so DVI-I is vastly superior
i dunno about the CPU's. anyone have real benchmarks for the 2? isnt the via better on power? (which is what really matters as long as both can play 1080p content)

edit: the C7 is faster than the Celeron

http://www.dvhardware.net/article5096.html

somehow they are saying the C7 can beat a Xeon too lol
http://www.technovoyance.com/index.php/VIA-C7-beats-Intel-Quad-Core-Xeon.html

BTW you also forgot

Cloudbood 2xUSB < Asus 3xUSB

did my own comparison

Asus eee Vs Everex Cloudbook
WVGA w/ LED = WVGA w/ LED
600MHz Celeron (can OC to 900) < 1.2GHz Via C7-M
4GB SSD Soldered < 30GB PATA upgradable to 32GB SSD for about ~$170ish?
VGA < DVI-I
3xUSB > 2xUSB
920g < 910g (10 g lol)
Expandability PCI-E > Nothing
2GB capable > 1GB Capable
Atheros WLAN > REALTEK RTL8187 USB garbage (wtf usb wireless? So gay….)
Realtek HD Audio > Via garbage audio
decent download speeds from website > 8KB/s
2Yr warranty Vs 1yr Warranty
Touchpad larger > smaller touchpad (location you will just get used too but larger is easier to use)

8 Vs 4 eee blows away the cloudsux

not really

the eee is capable of 2 internal USB, you throw in dual 32GB OCZ ATV Turbo USB Flash drives and you got yourself 68GB solid state flash (the OCZ turbos are super fast)

You're kidding right? Via make great audio chipsets...

plus the security features...

the C7-M has hardware level AES encryption, but the via onboard audio boards that ive had sucked, they had crackling noises, stuttering, and didnt have a good signal to noise ratio, (maybe all that changed with this chipset since its new. ive had older via audio chipsets)

I like the Cloudbook far more then the EeePC, personally. The larger HDD just does it for me. I have no idea how people can say a 4GB HDD, solid state or not, is better then a 30GB drive. I can't store my movies, music, programs AND OS on a 4GB, no matter how fast/slow it is. Plus, I actually like where the trackpad is, that way I can hold it and walk around the house or Best Buy or where ever I am, and still surf the web. :) And strangely enough, I like its look. Its different, and I like different.

your right 4GB is not enough, but with the eee pc you can *tinker* with it as it has open slots where the cloudbook does not.
most people throw in a 16GB or 32GB corsair usb flash boosting the storage to past 30GB of Solid state memory.
i remember seeing someone throw in dual 32GB making 68GB of storage total

i DO however wish the eee pc had the DVI-I port, that is absolutly perfect.

NBR just put out a review on this. Some highlights

I called Everex tech support using the toll-free number located on the bottom of the CloudBook. I told them I just turned on my CloudBook and was stuck on the startup window and couldn't figure out what to do next (a little lie for the sake of a review isn't horrible). Rather than tell me to hold down the Alt key and drag the window I was put on hold for 15 minutes. When tech support finally returned they told me I could get a RMA (return merchandise authorization) to return my CloudBook for a replacement unit.

Despite the issue of fan noise, the most troublesome issue we encountered during the test period was heat. While plugged in the bottom of the CloudBook reached temperatures of 126 degrees Fahrenheit (too hot for direct skin contact over an extended period). HDTune reported hard drive temperatures as hot as 56 degrees Celsius (133 degrees Fahrenheit). During our benchmarking tests (which stressed the system and generated more heat) the WiFi card inside the CloudBook would stop working after 30-45 minutes of use. The only way to get the WiFi card to start working again was to turn off the CloudBook and let it cool down for at least 10 minutes before restarting the system and connecting to the Internet again.

Thats horrible that a company hasn't figured out (or spread the word) about a problem like that yet. I mean, you would have thought they would have been ready for a barrage of phone calls inquiring how to get through setup.

And once you start spending money, why not buy an X series Thinkpad?
The X40 is ideal.
