I am considering a solution for my largest client who operates in the medical industry here in Canada. They have three locations not too far from each other (within 50km of each other) and have a private 10MB MPLS network. Their infrastructure consists of mostly virtual servers so I want those replicated for DR purposes and then they have data backup needs. Since they operate in the medical industry the data has to stay within Canada. I have been strongly considering setting up some infrastructure at one of their other two locations and simply doing data backups at night over the MPLS connection for off site backups. I could do the same with the virtual machines as well since we are using Veeam with an enterprise license, rather then taking it outside to a cloud provider. Just looking for thoughts in case my idea is crazy.

The first question is how large a data installation do they have? Do they want live replication or nightly batch backups? What hours are they operating as this will impact the time you have for backup windows. Are these 3 independent locations or a client/server install? What are their requirements for backup, just a simple image? Historical backups (weekly, monthly, yearly snapshots needing to be retained for regulatory reasons (I don't know the Canadian regulations)?) What operating systems need to be supported? Will the second location be a hotsite to be brought up in case of destruction of the primary or simply a repository of the system backups?
 
They have about 1.5 TB of data and that includes virtual machines. Right now I have a second vmware host onsite at the main location for replication. Most of their data is backed up to tape and taken offsite nightly. What I want is data duplicated to a second site and vm's replicated to a second site. Since I am using Veeam for backups and replications I can use that software to facilitate that. Each of the other two sites as a single server that acts as DC, DNS, DHCP and some file storage. At the moment I am replicating their critical application server ever half hour and their exchange every hour, I'd like to stay within that window for offsite replications too. The second location could be a hot site and with Veeam you can re IP replicated vm's if you need to bring them up live in a DR site.
