What's going on with relic closing a bunch of threads? I am just wondering, I see threads get killed for flaming reasons but I have been in two of them just today that he killed, that had no flaming at all. Again, just wondering. :p

If it is for the good of the forum, keeping the place cleaned up, great...but it seemed a bit...premature is all.

Once the question has been answered the thread gets closed I assume.

I find it keeps threadjacking to a minimum, lost questions to a minimum etc.

MD

Yes, I dont know what the point is? Clean the place up? What if you want to add something? It usn't be this way... very new.
I dunno...

I was kind of wondering the same, since it means starting brand new threads on the same subject if there is more input to the discussion (even if it has been answered in the original thread).

Don't take it personally folks.
When a thread is answered I'll close it. Threadjacking/crapping is a problem that has been getting out of hand with the surge in posting here, so this is the solution.
It's a fairly common practice in many tech fora, and I'll be trying it here to see if it keeps things cleaner.

If you have more questions, feel free to start another thread. No problem.
I don't delete the threads because they may still be referenced and peoples post counts are not affected by a lock.

Feel free to consider it a competition. See how many "good answer, closed thread" you can rack up in a week. ;) So far MD is pwning you guys. hehe

Heck, if someone wants to keep score I'll even sticky a scoring thread for you geeks.

Good posting.

Well, looks like -1 for relic. He answered the question and didn't close the thread.

HA! :p

I'm going to leave it open for discussion for a bit. Let's see if you guys are interested.

I'm not doing this "For the Glory" LOL

I just do this to help out fellow enthusiasts, clear up mis-conceptions, urban-myth and maybe teach someone something new etc...

You guys have a great weekend.

Actually it's been less work. :)

You can now walk the dog, watch a movie, or go to bed
You are scaring ppl away with all that locking, they hardly dare posting :(

:D

And add [H]ardCOP to your signature....

Trust me the thread count hasn't decreased.
Though, the noise level has. ;)

Mostly we're missing the hijacks and thread crapping.
We all can do without those.

...problem is, the posts I was watching get closed before I see the answer I was looking for... :D

Ok then, I will keep reposting....doh! :p

hehe...then you didn't pose the right question. ;)
Post away, [H]ardBro. :)

relic i'm actually starting to like the lack of pointless posts we are having.

makes life a lot easier when when checking threads

I've gotten several PMs that say the same thing. But this is a lot different than the norm here so let's take it slow and see what happens.

Thank you very much for your input. :) Thank you ALL for the input.

I think its absurd to lock these threads in the absence of flaming.

I want to end my conversation when I say its over. Not a moderator.

+100000000000

if theres no reason to close it, dont close it.

someone might come along some time later and have some very useful info to add...
what are they going to do, post a new thread saying "hey some guy who posted some thread that was closed, I got some new info for you" - no, they are going to say "to hell with it" and not post

Well, that's pretty much why they're being locked. People have a tendancy to carry on conversations, typically with little or nothing to do with the original post, long after a question has been answered. Besides, if you had something useful to add, I'm sure you could PM relic and ask him to let you back in. Now that he doesn't have to read all those threads for falmes/highjacks, I'm sure he has plenty of time to consider your request. (You're welcome relic :) ).

Subjective and discussion oridented threads aren't being locked (atleast not for this reason), so good on topic debate and thought are not being supressed.

Personally I like the idea. It gets the little direct simplistic things off the front page quickly, makes more room for the in depth or good discussions, and makes it simple to help out those still in need.

How is that a problem?

the rules
2,3,4, (5 if you do it alot i suppose) and 8 make it a problem.

It's disorderly and disruptive is all.
relic is just trying to ensure the most pertinant questions are the most likely to be seen and answered,
and that threads stay on topic.

We don't need 'why is my chip running at 1.1ghz' on the top for a week because a few people want to use it as a chat room. Or perhaps worse yet, some people see the opertunity for an easy post_count++ and give the same advice that's been given ad nauseum already.

It is going a bit too quick tho. At least wait a bit to see if it goes off topic or whatever, fine, when the thread is dead, lock it.

Far too many of them I have gotten an email to check the thread and when I get there its locked already. Original post 2 days ago, my post 1 day ago, last post 3 hours ago and its locked.

Admittedly, there is a problem with threads going off topic and such, but you're stifling the conversation and breaking the flow of ideas. Back in the old days, the "last AMD vs Intel post EVER" days, we had tons of worthless garbage in that thread... we had at least as many highly informative posts explaining differences in architecture and methods to get Tualatins working in old boards, etc... 50% off topic, 50% genius.

In the rules or not doesn't make it a problem. If the question has been answered, I see nothing wrong if the discussion spawns something else. There can be more to this forum than running it like a tech company.

...yes many threads get a bit off track but good replies still get in...not every forum poster checks the threads every 30 minutes of every day....some of have other lives...

i agree with that 100% totally. even if the question has been answered. these are discussion forums are they not?

i do think the threads are closed a bit fast but some of them don't need any more elaboration. but as least waiting one day couldn't hurt too much.

It was an experiment that seemed to work well, but a small minority of folks obviously disliked it. If you guys feel strongly that you like or dislike the way it worked, feel free to chime in.

As it stands, it's very different from the way THIS board is run so without strong support for continuing, it's not going to happen.

Hi Relic - I respect what your trying to do. :) But personally I like to see threads die on their own and drop out of sight unless there is a flame fest going on or some other compelling reason to lock it.
Take care 'bro.
Robert

I too think it is a bit premature closing them. Yes, sometimes a good answer gets in right away, but like I said before, some of us do NOT visit the forums every 15 minutes all day long. Sometimes I may be a full day (or two) before I get back on the forum and if the thread gets closed I cannot discuss it any further without starting a new thread...

I can understand if it needs to be shut down due to a flaming or something going on, but as long as the discussion is ongoing and getting daily replies, no need to shut it down.

the thread maybe answered but what if someone else had a better answer or an easier solution. what if you may think the thread was answered but the answer was wrong?

these have always been disscusion forums.
and some good discussion have come out of threads that had already been asnwered.
now if yo close everythread that has been answered how are we suppose to have good discussions.

thas my 2 cetns

I think Filter pretty much nailed it.

Don't take it the wrong way Relic, I understand and somewhat agree, just think you're going a bit too fast.

Its starting to feel too much like school, answer the question as per the book and shut up, next question. It isn't that simple.

Personally I'd like to see the threads stay open longer.

My thread (this one) was closed before I had a chance to come back and thank everyone for helping...and to say that I did finally find the cpu multiplier option in the bios :p

But if I still had a question (never know, I might be really stupid :p ), I would've had to start a whole new thread for it by then.

Apparently the idea of intelligent discussion is being shunned in this discussion forum. :(

Quick answers just like quick service at McDonalds. To bad that equates to bad service from a bunch of kids that can bairly understand English. Is that what this forum is going to turn into?

Does It Need To Be Spelled Out?!

Post Another Farking Thread If Your Gawdamned Post Was Not Asnwered .... F**k!
