I want to clone my OS boot drive (Xp) on a 120 gb drive to a 80gb drive

why?

the 120gb drive is too loud ;) , I'm a silent pc freak :D

so my source drive is a 120gb Seagate 7200.7
isn't full, only 35GB

to a 80gb Seagate IV Barracuda



questions

what is an easy FAST, free progam to use for this, HD clone free edition doesn't allow Larger > smaller

I tried some others on Ultimate Boot CD, too slow
or is cloning very slow?

also I heard of a XP program to prepares for this, but can't find it


should I just do a reinstall of XP and copy everything over?

Cloning is slow, since it copies sector-by-sector and verifies.

You should address your question to Seagate, asking if their 'DiscWizard' installation utility will clone from larger-to-smaller drives. Their site FAQ may answer your question.

I suspect the answer is yes, so long as actual data size does not exceed partition size.

Both Maxtor and WD cloning utilities automatically ask if you wish to scale partition sizes, but I've never used the Seagate utility.

well, I decided just to reinstall XP on the other HD, I'll slowly tweak it

I don't remember seeing copying on it
