Cloning directly from Windows... how does it happen

So I haven't had to clone a disk in so many years I am really outdated on the subject. I used to use ghost from DOS command line. Now doing some research I will probably go with clonezilla or EaseUS Todo. Clonezilla runs from a live cd/usb and I don't have a problem with that. But EaseUS runs directly from Windows.

So how does the cloning from Windows work? There are many files that are used by services and system files being written, drivers and so on. I am interested in knowing how a software manages to clone an OS which is in use. Does EaseUS swap files in use in and out of memory? What about the virtual memory file and the paging?

Does anybody know?

Most backup & clone apps that are running Windows use shadow volume copying, which allows for files to be copied while they are in use.
