cloning a hard drive

Can you clone a system hard drive? I want to make an exact copy of my hard drive on my gaming pc so that if I were to have a major HD issue I could just plug in the spare drive and be back up in minutes. Is this possible? If so what programs would I need etc.
 
I use Acronis at work pretty much every day. It's straight forward, easy to use and it does a good job. Also, free is hard to argue with. Just my 2 cents.

Acronis (the standalone version) is now no longer free (though a crippled free trial version is available). The program now costs $30 per PC (regular price: $50). And the Acronis program that's available as free downloads from Western Digital and Seagate are crippled versions of older versions of Acronis that do not support large (>2TB) hard drives.
 
I just did a clone yesterday with Acronis free Western Digital version. One of drives was a WD Black. Took under 20 mins with a cleanish Win 7 install. 37GB. I didn't time it. If you have a WD drive, you can download and install it for free.

A Windows Home Server is my backup system though. If you get a virus or spyware, you just reboot your machine with a WHS boot disk and pick which backup you want to reinstall. It will do incremental backups everyday without you doing anything.
 
Yah, I use the free Acronis from WD since I have an external WD drive to store the backups. :D
 
I used Acronis free from Western Digital, worked fine, copied without any issues.
 
you should just mirror the drive then if it crashes you can just load the image and put it back as it was at the time you made the mirror.
