when I hit "apply selection" my computer freezes up.

I have found clockgen to be excellent on Socket 939 boards and the few AM2 boards I have used.
Its been a fantastic tool for quickly finding the max overclock which I then set in stone in the CMOS.
On my current Asus A8N-E, it never ever crashes unless I exceed somethings speed. Not one unexplained crash in 1.5 years of hardcore fiddling
On my old Athlon XP, it would crash every second time I changed the bus speed so I understand the frustration.
OP, there are 2 reasons it can crash
1) the technology isnt perfect and it does happen more on some kit than others.
2) you have exceeded the speed of at least one component in your system. this could be FSB, memory or CPU.
Its also possible that an overclock can push a tired/faulty PSU to the limit but this is less likely.
Are you good at clocking or do you need some assistance?
If you dont click apply, it wont affect anything.
Remember not to leave it on some silly speed in case you hit the Enter key by accident
I use CG to overclock while running Orthos.
Every 30 seconds I boost the FSB speed one notch and wait for Orthos to fail.
If there is an immediate PC crash, its usually HTT bus too fast, FSB too fast or a random crash.
Try the same again, if it keeps happening, something is too fast.
Once Orthos has failed I back off 5 or 10Mhz on the FSB and leave Orthos testing for many hours, a pretty quick way to get close to the max speed.
