Has anyone figured out a rough clock for clock comparison of the core2 vs Pent D. I know it is going to vary from application to application, but some of you lucky core 2 duo owners spit out some numbers.

for instance what model # of core2 would a pentD clocked at 4.0 be similar to?

You would have to underclock the weakest core2duo proc to reach that level. Maybe an allendale at 1Ghz or so ?
Tough to guess, as at those low clocks it doesnt scale exactly linearly, and right now everyone is overclocking, not underclocking. Though I'm sure someone will eventually test it.

Yeah even the cheapest core2duo proc is awesome. Intel really came back with a vengeance, when their $200 chip slightly OCd can beat AMDs $1000 chip.
 
I think a pentium D overclocked to 4.0 ghz will match a conroe 6300 non overclocked of course... Maybe not so good in gaming department but everything else...
 
I have a D which is overclocked to 4.2ghz , it takes it 32sec to do 1mg PI , whilst i tried it on a overclocked E6300 at 2.7ghz and it did it in 20sec.

For pi that is a great acheivement.
I would agree in saying that straight out of box the e6300 even beats the extreme D.

The main place it differs alot is multitasking and that is overall difference anyway.
 
Yep, as long as Super pi means anything....

Oh wait it doesnt.... I can write a bash script that will blow superpi out of the water on a pentium classic....


Secondly Superpi has a margin of error over 20% you can run superpi on the same hardware twice in a row on fresh reboots and have a completely different result.... It is not now, nor has it ever been a reliable testing system...

To make matters worse the margin becomes even larger when testing different hardware, close to 50%....
 
i think the Core 2 Duo is about 2X faster than the Pentium D clock for clock.
 
well, I have a Pentium D 920 at 3.9Ghz, I'll soon find out with my 6600 being delivered tomorrow. :)

Maybe before I put it in, I'll clock my Pentium D down to 3Ghz and run some benches, then with my 6600 overclocked to 3Ghz re-run them.

Or downclock my 6600 to 1.95Ghz (half of my Pentium D) so you can say Pentium D at X clock speed is % slower than conroe at 1/2 the Ghz.
 
You can't measure like that. It depends on how the code works. At some things, the Conroe will only barely outperform the Pentium D on a clock-for-clock basis. At other things, it will be twice as fast. At some things, it will be much more than twice as fast. It depends on what you do.

But it doesn't matter, really. The Pentium is O-B-S-O-L-E-T-E. Regardless how good it was in the past (which it wasn't), it's now a part of history and no longer relevant.

HAHA.... I wouldn't call it obsolete or part of history.. I have pentium D... Sure it eats watts and it gets hot when I overclock it but it's no slouch either with quality board and ram... Does everything I want to do and more... For $100 dual core... Can't be beat...

Agreed! I paid less than $100 for mine, and it performs fairly well. I know it's got nothing on conroe, but I'm sure I'll keep it around for the HTPC once my Conroe comes in!

Man , are you in for a surprise, i only had a E6300 to mess around with.

Just try two seperate instances of 32meg pi and 1 meg pi on the current system and you open two differnt files when you do that and dont do it from one program, when you get your results compare it with your E6600 straight out of the box and there is about 30-40% just on super pi, amazing , everything else you will be drooling over too. :) Cool cpu

Not a slouch? The 3.7 GHz "Extreme Edition" P4 often gets its lunch stolen by the 1.8 GHz Conroe! That's twice the clock speed and probably three times the power consumption, for no better performance.

Yeah, I'd say it's obsolete. People still use it, sure, but it has no real future.
 
I've got a few different CPU's and some Conroe's on the way (6400 and 6600), P4 805d and a P4 950 as well as a shiney new X2 4400+ 2meg coming for the computer I'm going to raffle off for my 3 month old niece that has cancer.

While I can't do a amd to intel comparison, i can pop in the different intel CPU's into my motherboard (as long as the ASUS P5N32-SLI Deluxe that's on the way is the Rev 2 that works with Conroe) and do a comparison at stock voltages for some general ideas of speeds.. not sure what apps to run for testing though.. prob. DVDShrink, Winrar with some set file size, i can do some games, but those will all be video card limited. I have a few celeron's as well, but i'm pretty sure i'd have to reinstall Windows for those since they are single core.

What apps should i run to test speeds?

I'm curious to see how a 2.8GHz Pentium D compares to the E6300. I'm looking for an uprade that is pure "WOW," not these little speed boosts when I'm going "I think this is faster..."

Yes not a slouch when overclocked... I can play all my games fine and compete with 3800+ x2 and the slowest conroe... All this for about $100... I'll eventually get rid of it when conroe 6600 drops to around $200... But it does everything I want to do now...

You got that right about having no more future but than I have conroe ready motherboard... Conroe's time will come soon as Kentfield releases... ;)
