clickidy click - several different hdd's clicking!

my hdds (hdd1 and hdd2) were clicking and eventually my computer broke. so i RMA'd both hdd's and got 2 new hdd's.

the new hdd's (hdd3 and hdd4) kept clicking. they would work for some periods, up to a week, then break again. i replaced the IDE cable but the problem remained. at one point, the hdd's sounded like a "choo choo train."

so i decided to check each hdd seperately. hdd3 kept clicking when it was alone. hdd4 also kept clicking when it was alone. this has brought me to the following possible reasons for clicking:

1) my PSU is messed up

2) my mobo's ide controller is messed up


these are very unlikely reasons:

3) bad ide cable (ive tried 2 different ones)

4) bad hdds (ive tried 4 different ones, and 3 definately click)


where do i go from here? do i get a new mobo? a new psu? i (sadly) dont have money to be spending on computer parts, so i need a definate diagnoses on why my hdds click.

what do i do?
