ClearOS & Areca 1880i

Hopefully this isn't a completely studip question but..

Unless I'm wrong, the Areca 1880 series are real Hardware RAID and not FakeRAID so they should be completely transparent to the Linux OS. This should mean they are compatible right?
If not, what are the odds that downloading the driver source code and compiling it for ClearOS would work? And if it is completely transparent do the drivers just provide an interface to the Controller from within the OS?
I understand the concepts of RAID but I never really looked at this side of things so I want to make sure I'm right before I go ahead and get any hardware...
