Clear laminate coating for pc cases?

I love my new aluminum case, but I'm already worried about it scratching easily. Does anyone know of a clearcoat material that could be painted/applied to prevent scratching and keep the case looking good?

I believe 3m sells a clear plastic stuff that people put on the hoods of their cars to prevent rock chips ect. When it is applied, you can hardly see it.

Yeah, it's called Scotchgard Paint Protection film...and to cover a mid-tower case, it'd probably cost about $200-300 for enough material, plus you need the expertise to put it on (3M certifies shops to do this). Not cost-effective. Any other suggestions, folks?

Krylon Clear Coat Acrylic Spray Paint

OR

You could try a protection mechanism like this one to keep people away from your box. Of course you'll probably also need these to help clean up the mess.

Seriously - aluminium does scratch easily, but just how easily depends on the coating it already has., Anodised aluminium is quite durable - hell my grandmother has anodised aluminium lids for cooking pots from the 50s and 60s that still have SOME colour to them.

car wax.
a nice natural / carnuba, so you can readily remove it later.

beyond that, take some care with your expensive shit.

This would be why I'm asking the question, eh? After all, we all have had an accident now and then, when hauling a case to a LAN party or something like that? If I wasn't interested in taking care of my stuff, then I wouldn't be that interested in protecting it, either.

Thanks for such an insightful answer.

You may want to look into satin finish polyurethane, sprey of course. And a non-yellowing formula.

waaaaaaaa.
Look, you're the goof buying a costly delicate-surfaced aluminum case, then considering fucking it up by applying a film to it. Or dragging it around. Like buying a Boxster for an off-road race.

Again I point out - why fuck up a nice metal finish with a clearcoat - and furthermore, a clearcoat which itself will take damage even more easily than the metal, and will be a sonofabitch to touch up or remove.

Again I say - organic wax. You can strip it right off when it gets tired, and wax it up again.

Poly, when applied right and allowed to harden, is expremely tough and fairley easy to buff scratches out of. It is also very hard to see when applied to anything, expecially satin.

Besides, what he does with his case is his business. He was just asking for options.

-edit- Before you decide to do anything to the case itself I would try it out on a spare drive bay cover. Mask it off and apply different coatings to each spot to see which one gives you the results you like.

You got an answer? Great. Thanks for that. That's why I ask questions, to get answers.

You got an attitude? You can check it at the door. That was my issue, not your advice. You automatically assumed I wanted a protectant because I wasn't capable of taking care of my stuff. Then you decided I needed to be told to take care of my stuff. I can do without that.

Poor example - http://www.porsche.be/company/history/milestones/8090.htm

Porsche 959 wins the Paris Dakar rally in 1985.

Looking after an aluminium case is a pain. I have a couple of original shuttles with a brushed finish that show finger prints.

Clearcoating is drastic, clear film is expensive, carrying around wrapped in cotton wool is impractical.

Don't be too fast to dismiss Rayra's wax idea though. Cheap, easy to apply, and easy enough to remove. Wont damage the case either, and water will bead on the surface ;).

I bet the Porsche that won the Paris-Dakar was well waxed :D
