Clear cube computer project

Hey all,
Some of you may remember that I posted a while back trying to see if there was enough interest in my computer cases to start making them in quantity to sell. I decided to go ahead and make them, and wanted to share the results with you guys. I just finished making a bunch of clear cube cases and putting my computer into one of them. I also added a lot of lighting, sleeved my PSU, added a second HDD, and put a clear cover on my PSU. I really am pleased with the results, but I think there is a little missing still, and want to hear some ideas. I think that some additional lighting in blue under the motherboard and some yellow LED's shinning on the sound and video cards would help it out a lot. Here are some pictures:

If you are interested, there are a lot more pictures of it available at http://www.cubedpc.com/photos.htm, and information is at http://www.cubedpc.com/thecube.htm

Man, that looks fantastic. That HHD placement is just beggin for the HHD window mod.

Excellent case. If I had any money at all I would ask you how much they are. :)

Xeese: The old computer wasn't too hard to improve on, it sure was ugly :D
Shinare: I've actually got a windowed drive at home begging to get put in. It's going have to wait though because I'm at college right now and not going back home till summer. I think it will look sweet, bu the shinny one will do until then.

Looks good, but $189 + S&H is a little steep.

Most people aren't going to pay that much for that thing; you can get a Li Li for that price, or a Kingwin for even less.

Many clear cases are also cheaper.

While standing on the case is impressive (I think?), it's a little irrelevant.

Uhh... lots of computer websites stand on cases to test how strong they really are. It's not irrelevant because if you are buying a case you want to know how tough it is.

Nice case... $189 may be a little steep for mATX, but being a small business I can definitely understand that... Also nice work making it accessible without tools.

looks pretty cool. i agree on the hdd though. needs moar window!

too bad it costs that much, though. too much money for me:(

The whole standing on it thing I think is is impressive because it is acrylic. I've never actually stood on any other actylic case (not sure my friends would really like that idea, especially with their components already in it), but many other acrylic cases just don't feel like they could suport that weight. Aluminum on the other hand is prety much a given that it can. I use my old tower case as a seat in my dorm room. :D

For a limited run case, the pricing isn't bad. It does what is meant to do and does it well. Mountain mods does it on a larger scale, and the pricing scales larger as well.

I would argue those sites are also performing an irrelevant test. I mean you could throw a case off the roof of a tall building to test how strong it is. Or you could detonate a nuke next to it.

They're irrelevant tests because you're never going to, in practical use terms, stand on your case. "Oh, hey, I can't find a footstool, let me use my case, with hundreds of dollars of components inside, to stand on." Even if the case doesn't collapse, say it tips, and your hard drives die on you?

Lots of people doing something doesn't legitimize it.

I think for some cases it is irrelevent, while for others it is relevent. One of the features of this case that is important for this case is the ability to take it to LANs and other places with you. Transportation can cause a lot of stress on a case (think stacking things in your trunk, or it falling off the seat or slidding across the back seat and hitting the door). Since arylic cases tend to be notriously weak, I think it is important to show that this case is well built and can withstand a large amount of force. For cases that will not be regularly transported, I would argee with you that it is not an important test, because if it is just sitting on your desk, it won't matter.

I personally think you have a great product there. The quality looks fantastic. If I were in the market for a clear case I would definately buy one. Keep up the good work.

ps. $189 for a quality good looking case is not really extreme. If it does the job and looks good too I say 189 is a good price. You deserve it for the work youv'e put into it.

Xoxide is reselling them. Steve, the owner, was a really big help in getting this business started and is a really great guy. Also, I believe that FrozenCPU will have them up on their site shortly. Those are the two places that will be reselling them.

I think it looks great. If I was in the market for a small clear case, I'd definately grab one. Keep up the good work, and good luck.

while it is sick sick SICK looking, i think my 35 dollar ebay'd checkercube will be serving me faithfully for the time being.

SICK!

I completely agree with you!

Maybe you can throw in some impact tests and scratch resisitance, as those are the bane of plexi case owners.

spotpuff: I probably will do that. I have one cube that I built completely backwards, like a mirror image of what it was supoosed to be (i dont know how i was that stupid). So if I do some tests, take some pictures and then flip them in photoshop, I'll be able to do that with no cost to me :D The problem would be getting results that are meaningful, I've got to think about that. "Yep, dropping it from 5 feet onto a rock scratched it"

The case looks great. The only suggestion I have is an applique, or (even better!) etching. This would look incredible with green LEDs and a matrix-like etching on the side.

If the next 3 months or so goes well, I would like to get a cheap kit laser cutter, which would allow me to etch custom graphics and cut cases individually, instead of having to get dozens made to keep them economical. I think it would be cool if I could accept custom graphics and etch them before assmbly so that you could have a completely customized case.

I like your design.

I'm actually doing a similar thing. I registered a domain some time ago. I'm not sure how you are doing yours. I'm getting my design laser cut.

The laser etching on the case side is also going to be an option as I have access to a laser cutting machine. I have already done it on regular sunbeam acrylic cases and it looks awesome!

It's funny, my design is also for a micro atx setup. I'll be posting my pics soon!

Although I don't want to sell them for more than $100.00 w/ 350 ps.

Does your comes with all the sleeving and lighting. If so that is a lot of work and $189 is probably a good price.

:)

Good Luck

There are so many options and styles for PSU's that I think its best to not include a PSU and pass the savings on, so that you aren't locked into using a certain PSU, especially in a case like this where it is highly visible.
I would love to have access to a laser cutter, there are so many ideas running through my head that I want to do that I could with one.

Get yourself a VersaLaser. Thats was on my Christmas list last year... wonder why noone bought me one. :(

I was looking more at the Emission Technologies kit, it can be had for about $7k and and can cut up to 24" by 48". That is a lot of money to sink into this so soon, so I'll just have to keep outsourcing the laser cutting for the time being.
