Since when do clean installs screw up? My friend did a clean Vista install on his m5300 Alienware laptop (it came with XP but he wanted a fresh install of the Vista upgrade he got).

Everything works, except we've got the No Audio Output Device Installed/Not Plugged In error. Even plugging speakers or headphones in does not produce sound. We've tried uninstalling the High Definition Audio Device from the Device Manager, then installing Vista drivers again. We've tried two different sets of drivers. We've tried letting Windows Update do its work.

No dice.

I'm at a complete loss. It doesn't help that this friend is 120 miles away.

Some Intel boards on XP needed a UAA driver installed before the Audio would work. I don't know if Vista has UAA drivers in it's collection or not. Has he checked the device manager to see if anything is not installed?

What do you mean by "UAA?" There's nothing funky in the Device Manager (no red "X"s, no yellow exclamation marks).
