CLC for a 6970?

Hey guys, I'm pretty noob to water cooling so hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction so I don't melt my house down. :D

I have a XFX 6970 that I blew the fan controller on (too much power into a Accelero Twin Turbo II). Anyways, the card still works and I don't want to invest a whole bunch of money into a whole WC setup but I want to mine with it and use it as my lab rat for OCing. Then I read that some people are using CPU CLC's on GPU's (H50/H60, Kuhler 620/920, etc).

So a couple questions.

  1. Has anyone here done this? What make/model did you use and how were the results?
  2. I still have the heatsinks on the 6970 VRAM from the Accelero cooler kit. Will those be enough to cool the VRAM by themselves with a box fan blowing on them or would I need to install a bracket like the Kraken G10 with a 120mm fan?
  3. Suggestions on coolers?

Thanks in advance!

Partially to try something new on something that I won't cry about if I destroy it.

I'm also not sure if I can control the fan speed via cgminer if it's connected to the mobo. Anyone know ?

Y do you need to just let them run max. Fans are very quiet anyways. Or u can set them to 70 or 80% or whatever you want in motherboard bios. Sure mobo software gives some fan control options as well from within windows. I wouldn't put any effort/money into a 6970 anyways. You ad the $100 you'd spend on a new aio cooler (minimum accelero hybrid is like $140 if I remember correctly) to the inflated prices of amd cards you could get a nice GPU upgrade with a decent non reference cooler. Used 7950 or 280x.
