How many times have you gotten those annoying Classmates.com spams that say “someone is looking for you” or “you have new messages on your profile?” I would venture to say that a lot of you guys get that crap too. Well, one guy has had enough and sued Classmates.com. Good for him.

But once he'd parted with the $15, Michaels learned the shocking truth: No one he knew was trying to contact him at all. Classmates.com's come-on was a lie, and he'd been scammed.

Classmates.com deserved a slow and painful death. Hopefully this ends all the bullshit emails they spew out.

I've had an AOL filter for classmates.com emails for years.

Rest in misery, Classmates!

Yes I realize, I'm thinking about all the friend finder ads and stuff you see when a popup directs you to some site you never had an intention of looking at but will probably stay at and somehow get lost for the next 5 hours. whew

YGPM about former classmates who are looking for you, Steve! (deposit $19.99 into your optical drive for a 1 year subscription)

Next you're going to tell me that all those girls that are interested in your "free profile" on those matchmaker sites don't really exist if you upgrade to premium!

Or that all those smoking hot girls that pop up in those "porn/spam/friendfinder" ads really are not from those cities that strangely enough is near by where you live as well!

Is this for people that have the service or people just getting hounded to sign up the first time?

If you are a member why not click on the unsubscribe link?

Or does that just make too much sense?

I myself have only gotten a single email telling me that somebody had singed my account and to sign up for their gold service to see who it was. I went ahead and signed up for it and in fact somebody did sign my account to say they had been to it. I let the gold membership expire as I don't visit the site but one in a great while and now maybe every 3 - 5 months I'll get an email asking me to come back, but none have lied to me to get me to sign up. On top of that every email I have gotten has had a link to click to stop recieving such emails.

They didn't always. Someone put my addy in there and it took me a year to get the site to stop sending me messages.

Same here...but when I got that email, I logged into the site and it showed me who was trying to contact me before I paid for the premium membership.
I let it lapse since my graduating class was maybe 50 people, 15 of which I actually want to correspond with (most of which I found on myspace)

I bet he did it on purpose so he could sue when he found nothing. If I knew more about the legal system I would total do it.

Should there be something wrong with that? I'm not sure I see anything unethical about buying something you think will be a scam with the intent to sue the people if it really is a scam.

no there is nothing wrong with that I just wish I would have thought of it first and knew some lawyers to get me some money. I'd be a profesional scam finder and make millions getting ripped off.

If so many of you have problems with Classmate.com then why did you sign up for it and why do you keep your current account?

I doubt hardly any of us have an account, but I'm definitely tired of their spam, popups, and obnoxious banners.

I don't like Lawsuits that are hey lets sue someone! However i like this, in general I like the idea of suing companies that are in spam, sure you'd need to provide some proof that they worked them them but I don't think it would be hard.

Also while we are on the subject can I sue Facebook for pain and suffering? Not only do I am I single but I have to be reminded of it on just about every page!

I think unsolicited advertisement/sales should be penalized by death, slow painful death. This goes for email, mail, door to door, etc.

I also feel that any advertisement that is not 100% true as read should result in a default by the advertisement company of $1 million per violation.

I havn't signed up for classmate.com. Besides, anyone I'd like to contact from highschool I already know how to contact.

its completely necessary for our system. it should be happening more often.

I don't understand how companies with false advertising can turn a profit. Look where it got CC..

I just had my HS reunion and after it...classmates kept on sending e-mails that several HS friends signed my guest book...so I upgraded....read the two names..they did graduate the same year...but I never socialized with them.

I just sent them an e-mail I want a refund.

Maybe this lawsuit will give companies and their advertising agencies a clue.

Don't try to pull the wool over our eyes. Yeah, sure, you may get a few of us with your underhanded phsychological tricks but you won't get us all. As the article's lawsuit details.

In the legal system, intention to defraud is all you need to bust someone for a scam.

He proved intent, whether or not he knew that the email itself was a scam and that there was nobody looking for him once he paid the $15.

Nevermind that I've also had a Classmates.com filter set up for some years. I never used my real name online nor given my primary email address to anyone I knew from school... so it would have been impossible for anyone I knew from school to try to contact me with that email address. Right then I knew it was a con.

Classmates.com are spammers, scammers and should be treated like such.

junk mail filters are your friend on this one.

Maybe. I have a profile up there but will never pay. On ONE occasion someone pinged me and at least at the time you didn't need to pay for them to find you.

The ads they run are seriously deceptive. The service is a good idea, but their pretty damn slimy.

They're gonna get pwn3d.
