I'm currently running a 3200+ Venice 939 and am trying to decide whether to get the 3700+ San Diego or 148 Venus when I upgrade my mobo to the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium 939 shortly. I'm hoping that perhaps I can get more clear information relative to the Opty before the upgrade, as I'd prefer going w/ the Opty.

Firstly, does the Opty 148 Venus require registered RAM? I've been reading that it does, but is that just pertaining to previous models/cores? I'd rather stick to my unbuffered OCZ w/ 3700+ San Diego and save money if that's the case. Secondly, I checked the ASUS website and it does not expressly list the Opteron as a supported CPU. Should I anticipate any stability or recognition issues from the ASUS board if I go w/ the Opty?

Any helpful input would be appreciated. Thanks.
 
no need for registered ram.

what asus board do you have? From what i've seen..most boards do not officially support the opterons but they work perfectly fine. my dfi ultra-d is not supported, but its latest bios sees the opteron 170 clearly.
 
Currently I'm running the MSI K8N-SLI board (which is why I'm upgrading :( ) and plan on going with the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium. As I said, the ASUS website doesn't specifically state support but as long as the Opty runs fine then I'm all go for it.

Opterons aren't technically "supported", but since they're 99% similar to San Diego chips, they're recognized easily. Also, only the Socket 940 Opterons require registered/ECC RAM. :)
